Whitham\u2019s genetics-based research is designed to conserve cottonwoods in the face of climate change.<\/p>\n<p>In the southwestern United States, Fremont cottonwoods grow at sea level up to elevations of 6,600 feet. These are often the dominant trees of riparian habitats. Although riparian habitat makes up less than three percent of the landscape, it is a hot spot of biodiversity and supports nearly 50 percent of the birds that nest in the region.<\/p>\n<table border=\"0\" width=\"300\" cellspacing=\"5\" cellpadding=\"5\" align=\"right\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<table border=\"1\" width=\"100%\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"10\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #61003d;\"><strong>NAU conservation grant awarded <\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>NAU and Tom Whitham\u2019s team has been awarded a grant to conduct riparian restoration projects in northern Arizona. The $100,000 award\u00a0from the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust will create a model for restoring degraded habitat along Arizona\u2019s Little Colorado River, with the planting of native trees better suited to withstand climate change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur goal is not to restore for past or even current conditions, but to pre-store to forecasted future conditions,\u201d said Whitham, executive director of NAU\u2019s Merriam-Powell Center for Environmental Research.<\/p>\n<p>Much of the project\u2019s genetics-based restoration work will be done on land owned by the Babbitt Ranches. \u201cThis project allows us to work with NAU scientists and other partners to test how genetic variation can help plants, and all the other living things that depend on them, adapt to a changing climate,\u201d said Billy Cordasco, Babbitt Ranches president.<\/p>\n<p>The restoration project will provide internships for Native American students through the Southwest Conservation Corps Ancestral Lands Program, with mentoring from individuals within the Navajo Nation, Arizona Game and Fish Department, National Park Service and other land management agencies.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Analyzing cottonwoods has become part of the Southwest Experimental Garden Array, a project with multiple growing sites. Whitham, a SEGA principal investigator, said the project is creating a significant database with a goal of identifying genes responsible for plants\u2019 drought tolerance, productivity, disease resistance, water use efficiency and diversity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy having these plants from sites around the state, we can identify the plants that will tolerate a three or a six degree increase in temperature,\u201d Whitham said. \u201cThis allows us a very experimental way to identify the source populations that can survive future climatic conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whitham and other scientists think this conservation strategy is especially important to keep foundation species in the landscape during climate change.<\/p>\n<p>Gathering data on the natural genetic variations that exist in the wild can inform restoration decisions. When tasked with restoring an area, Whitham said replanting with local tree genotypes adapted for today\u2019s climate would likely not survive projected future climatic conditions in a rapidly changing environment.<\/p>\n<p>The big data generated by the Southwest Experimental Garden Array is shared with numerous land management agencies throughout the region where the experimental forests and gardens are planted. This sharing of information is critical and time sensitive, Whitham said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHistorically, there has been a very long lag time between basic research and implementation into management practice and we can no longer afford to do it that way,\u201d Whitham said. \u201cWith the rates of climate change, there needs to be a seamless integration between the scientific findings and land management applications.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This practice\u00a0has already been achieved in agriculture, where a similar approach has changed management practices with soil scientists, plant geneticists and climatologists working together to increase crop production.
