The index highlights top-performing colleges and universities in 17 areas, as measured by the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System. Fowler presents students\u00a0Jessica Atkinson and Justin Hall\u00a0with Certificates of Appreciation for their safety efforts.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>NAUPD <\/strong>presented certificates of appreciation to students <strong>Jessica Atkinson<\/strong> and <strong>Justin Hall<\/strong> for their efforts in campus safety. After receiving an NAU Alert, the students called NAUPD with tips that led to the apprehension of a suspect on campus. After receiving the certificates, the students were given a tour of the dispatch room and discussed preventative safety measures. NAUPD encourages the campus community to \u201cstay alert, stay aware, and if you see something, say something.\u201d Find more of their safety tips <a href=\"https:\/\/nau.edu\/police\/safety\/\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>President <strong>Rita Hartung Cheng<\/strong> welcomed a delegation from the National University of Tucuman in Argentina who arrived in\u00a0Flagstaff to kickoff the <a href=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/nau-expanding-partnership-with-argentine-students\/#.Vip6vNNVhBd\">100,000 Strong in the Americas project<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/nau.edu\/CIE\/Global-Science-Engineering\/Destinations\/Universidad-de-Tucum%C3%A1n\/\">Geology and Energy Policy<\/a>. Four NAU and UNT students will participate in the field course exchange that highlights the unique natural resources in northern Argentina and the southwestern United States. This is NAU\u2019s first partnership with an Argentine university.<\/li>\n<li>NAU students <strong>Mari Cleven<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Emily Rose Litvack<\/strong> and <strong>Tyler Miranda <\/strong>received two student production Emmy awards at the Rocky Mountain Regional Emmy Awards ceremony October 17 in Scottsdale. The winning student production pieces included \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/113810407\">Fires of Change<\/a>\u201d and \u201cAstroNuts.\u201d NAU-TV&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Jerry Anderfuren<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>and<strong> Alexander Thomas<\/strong> won two professional regional Emmy Awards in the categories of \u201cPromotion Program-Single Spot or Image\u201d and \u201cPhotographer-Short Form\u201d for \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3ihO6liiOs4&amp;feature=youtu.be\">We are NAU: Inspiring Artists<\/a>.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>John Hultgren<\/strong>, lecturer in the Department of Politics and International Affairs, had a book\u00a0titled <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.upress.umn.edu\/book-division\/books\/border-walls-gone-green\">Border Walls Gone Green: Nature and Anti-immigrant Politics in America<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>published\u00a0by the University of Minnesota Press. The book examines American debates over the environmental impacts of immigration and argues that attention to the realities of migration can help to forge a new, more effective brand of environmental activism.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Aileen Farrar<\/strong>, lecturer of comparative cultural studies, presented her paper, &#8220;Reforming the Specters of Science in Frankenstein: A Monster\u2019s Newtonian Philosophy,&#8221; at the International Conference of Romanticism held in Park City, Utah. The conference invited interdisciplinary scholars to speak on issues of transgressive Romanticism. In her presentation, Farrar challenged the notion that Mary Shelley&#8217;s novel, <em>Frankenstein<\/em>, is a cautionary tale against the sciences and anticipates increased attention to the novel as its bicentennial in 2018 draws near.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/CR83HI7UkAQ9V8L.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-39861 \" src=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/CR83HI7UkAQ9V8L-300x182.jpg\" alt=\"Forest signing \" width=\"333\" height=\"202\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2015\/10\/CR83HI7UkAQ9V8L-300x182.jpg 300w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2015\/10\/CR83HI7UkAQ9V8L.jpg 599w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 333px) 100vw, 333px\" \/><\/a>Wally Covington<\/strong>, Regents\u2019 professor and executive director for NAU\u2019s Ecological Restoration Institute, was a speaker at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flagstaffwatershedprotection.org\/\">Flagstaff Watershed Protection Project<\/a> final Record of Decision signing ceremony on October 22 at the Museum of Northern Arizona\u2019s Easton Collection Center. Covington, pictured fifth from left, joined county, city and Forest Service officials to address the value of forest restoration and the multiple benefits of managing\u00a0forests, including increasing water resources. The signing includes the use of novel harvesting methods to reduce hazardous fuels on the steep slopes above Flagstaff\u2019s key watersheds. NAU&#8217;s\u00a0<b>Diane Vosick<\/b>, <b>Abe Springer<\/b> and\u00a0<b>Dave Huffman<\/b> have also provided science and leadership support for the project.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cyndi Banks<\/strong>, dean of the University College, and British lawyer James Baker have co-authored a book titled, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/us.sagepub.com\/en-us\/nam\/comparative-international-and-global-justice\/book241845\">Comparative, International, and Global Justice: Perspectives from Criminology and Criminal Justice<\/a><\/em>. The text presents and critically assesses a wide range of topics including comparative criminal justice, international criminology, and transnational and global criminology.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ishmael I. Munene<\/strong>, associate professor of educational leadership, served as a reviewer and resource specialist for the <a href=\"http:\/\/codesria.org\/spip.php\">Council for Development of Social Science Research in Africa<\/a>\u2019s African Diaspora Research Methodology Workshop held October 19-24 in Nairobi, Kenya. Following the workshop, more than\u00a020 research projects were awarded research grants for collaborative book projects between African-based scholars and those in the Diaspora.<\/li>\n<li>NAU\u2019s <strong>Department of\u00a0Education Psychology <\/strong>will represent NAU at two national meetings in support of\u00a0the White House&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/reach-higher\">Reach Higher Initiative<\/a>.\u00a0<strong>Patricia Young<\/strong>, assistant clinical professor and coordinator of the NAU Phoenix School Counseling Program, will attend the Southern Region Education Board national meeting in San Antonio that focuses on\u00a0updates to the college and career access curriculum for school counseling students and professionals in the field.\u00a0<strong>Joyce DeVoss<\/strong>, professor and coordinator of NAU&#8217;s Tucson Counseling Program, will attend the White House Convening of Leaders in College Access in Jacksonville, Fla. where the emphasis will be on measurement of goal outcomes made by the Arizona College and Career Ready team.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"search-results-excerpt-link\" href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/in-the-spotlight-oct-23-2015\/\">Kudos to these faculty, staff and students Do you have a spotlight item to share with the NAU community?
