{"id":39359,"date":"2015-10-05T13:36:06","date_gmt":"2015-10-05T20:36:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/?p=39359"},"modified":"2015-10-20T07:32:06","modified_gmt":"2015-10-20T14:32:06","slug":"geology-class-is-epicenter-of-dedicatee-tap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/geology-class-is-epicenter-of-dedicatee-tap\/","title":{"rendered":"Geology class is epicenter of dedicatee tap"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It wasn&#8217;t an earthquake that\u00a0shook things up during Professor <strong>David Brumbaugh<\/strong>&#8216;s class\u00a0this morning, but a visit from the Chain Gang announcing his selection as this year&#8217;s Homecoming Dedicatee.<\/p>\n<div style=\"float: RIGHT; padding: 10px; margin: 0 15px 5px 0;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-5Bil5zFhoc?rel=0\" width=\"432\" height=\"271\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Brumbaugh had just begun his physical geology lecture when the orange-clad student group charged with keeping NAU&#8217;s traditions interrupted the class to &#8220;tap&#8221; him. Professor <strong>Joseph Anderson<\/strong>, <a href=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/business-professors-choice-as-dedicatee-is-right-on-the-button\/\">last year&#8217;s dedicatee<\/a> who teaches in the W.A. Franke College of Business, joined the club to make the announcement.<\/p>\n<p>Anderson and the Chain Gang members\u00a0wore a button bearing the professor&#8217;s photo. Brumbaugh wasn&#8217;t\u00a0rattled by the shift in his lesson plans as his class\u00a0erupted in applause.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I thought we had a rush of new enrollees,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Paul Umhoefer<\/strong>, geology professor and director of the School of Earth Sciences and Environmental Sustainability, helped keep the club&#8217;s secret and joined in the announcement. He has worked\u00a0with Brumbaugh in the geology department since 1993.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Dave has been a dedicated instructor and researcher for over 40 years at NAU,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It is clear that he very much enjoys teaching both majors and other students in the classroom and in the field.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Brumbaugh also has served as the director of\u00a0the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cefns.nau.edu\/Orgs\/aeic\/index.html\">Arizona Earthquake Information Center<\/a>\u00a0at NAU for many years. The center\u00a0provides critical information on the earthquake hazards in the northern Arizona region on a real-time and long-term basis.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Homecoming Dedicatee tradition\u00a0<a title=\"NAU Homecoming Dedicatees 1936-2014\" href=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/nau-homecoming-dedicatees-1936-2015\/\">dates\u00a0back to 1936<\/a>\u00a0through which students select an NAU faculty or staff member whom students feel has demonstrated exceptional service to the university and interest in its students.<\/p>\n<p>Anderson said he was very deeply honored to be selected last year\u00a0and\u00a0to be chosen by his students. Several NAU alumni attended the banquet and spoke about the influence he had on their lives.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;All through the process, up to and including the parade, I felt like I really was a member of the NAU community, and that was wonderful,&#8221; Anderson said. &#8220;It&#8217;s certainly a memory I cherish, even with 23 years of memories at NAU.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0annual Homecoming Dedicatee Banquet begins at\u00a06 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 20, at the High Country Conference Center. Tickets are $10 for students and $15 for non-students and are available through the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ev11.evenue.net\/cgi-bin\/ncommerce3\/SEGetEventInfo?ticketCode=GS%3ANAU%3ANSP16%3ASP1020%3A&amp;linkID=twnau&amp;shopperContext=&amp;pc=&amp;caller=&amp;appCode=&amp;groupCode=SE&amp;cgc=\"><strong>Central Ticket Office<\/strong><\/a>.
