Reducing the risk of future destructive wildfires could be achieved by more prescribed burns and managed lightning-caused fires, according to a paper released this week in the journal <em>Science<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Authors of the paper,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/content\/349\/6254\/1280.full\"><em>Reform Forest Fire Management<\/em>,<\/a>\u00a0including NAU School of Forestry Professor <strong>Pete Ful\u00e9<\/strong>,<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>intended to raise awareness among stakeholders of the critical role of fire in forest management and to promote the use of fire on a larger scale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis paper\u2019s theme is about management and is essentially encouraging the use of fire at times and places when it can be used to reduce fuels, to thin forests and restore the ecological role of fire and to help reduce the occurrence of very severe fires in forests where those fires were not characteristic in the past,\u201d Ful\u00e9 said.<\/p>\n<p>Prescribed burns are planned fires to reduce the accumulation of fuels on the forest floor. Managed fires are usually caused by lightning and are allowed to burn, similar to the way fires burned naturally before fire suppression.<\/p>\n<p>In areas of ongoing fire suppression, fuels have accumulated to dangerous levels, enhancing the likelihood of dangerous and devastating fires. While the paper, an opinion piece, advocates for the increased use of fire in forest management, Ful\u00e9 said agencies in Arizona are already successfully using fire to reduce wildfire risk.<\/p>\n<p>But the paper\u2019s authors think a lot more should be done to protect forests and ecosystems, especially as development continues to expand into formerly undisturbed settings.\u00a0Ful\u00e9 said another concern is\u00a0funding for proactive restoration efforts is regularly\u00a0transferred to wildfire suppression\u00a0efforts.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_38966\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38966\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Pete-Fule-2-sm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-38966 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Pete-Fule-2-sm-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Pete Ful\u00e9 researchers forest health and wildfire risk.\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2015\/09\/Pete-Fule-2-sm-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2015\/09\/Pete-Fule-2-sm-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-38966\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">School of Forestry Professor Pete Ful\u00e9.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThinning and prescribed burning dramatically improve the chances of dry forests surviving severe fire,&#8221; said\u00a0Ful\u00e9, who likened thinning and burning efforts to quitting smoking. \u201cIt is not a guarantee for the future but it can reduce risk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The paper\u2019s lead author, Malcolm North, a research scientist with the U.S. Forest Service, said every time a fire is put out, fire danger increases. \u201cFire suppression works like a selective force ensuring that most wildfires are escapes that occur during extreme weather conditions in fuel-loaded forests,\u201d North said.<\/p>\n<p>Best practices for reducing wildfires over large landscapes combine use of fire and mechanical thinning of forests, an expensive undertaking, said Ful\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Ful\u00e9 also researches causes of\u00a0mega fires, and creates\u00a0models of future fire regimes and different scenarios for managing fires.
