These are among the ideas to be addressed by Hine Waitere, a Maori scholar visiting from\u00a0Aotearoa, New Zealand. She will participate in numerous campus <a href=\"http:\/\/nau.edu\/COE\/Waitere\/\">events <\/a>including a presentation Sept. 28.<\/p>\n<p>Waitere, who leads an Indigenous Leadership Center at a college designed to improve outcomes for Maori students, has been active in teacher education, Maori immersion and bilingual programs.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_38925\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38925\" style=\"width: 196px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Maori-Scholar-Hine-Waitere.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-38925\" src=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Maori-Scholar-Hine-Waitere.jpg\" alt=\"Hine Waitere, Maori scholar. \" width=\"196\" height=\"260\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-38925\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hine Waitere, Maori scholar.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWith NAU\u2019s commitment to Indigenous communities,\u00a0culturally responsive and relational pedagogy provides an opportunity to reframe and re-envision the conversations around Indigenous education,\u201d said<strong> Christine Lemley<\/strong>, associate professor of Bilingual Multicultural Education. &#8220;By understanding students\u2019 frames of reference in historical and political constructs, educators can develop practices to enhance educational outcomes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Waitere will share her insights into teaching methods with educators in Flagstaff, addressing issues like language and culture loss, access to education and uneven academic achievement,\u00a0Lemley said.<\/p>\n<p>Waitere\u2019s Sept. 28th presentation, &#8220;Working Across Multiple Boundaries,&#8221; is from 6-8 p.m., Sept. 8 at the Cline Library Assembly Hall. The event is free but tickets are required.
