{"id":38698,"date":"2015-09-03T13:01:22","date_gmt":"2015-09-03T20:01:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/?p=38698"},"modified":"2015-09-03T13:01:22","modified_gmt":"2015-09-03T20:01:22","slug":"engineering-bridges-future-past-for-students-in-nau-professors-easter-island-outreach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/engineering-bridges-future-past-for-students-in-nau-professors-easter-island-outreach\/","title":{"rendered":"Engineering bridges future, past for students in NAU professor\u2019s Easter Island outreach"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Archaeology and engineering point in different directions for students on an isolated, misunderstood island in the southeastern Pacific, but a summer program featuring both disciplines is bringing them closer to their cultural roots while opening a future of personal growth and environmental sustainability.<\/p>\n<p>Under the guidance of a team assembled by Northern Arizona University\u2019s <strong>Britton Shepardson<\/strong>, a group of high school students on Easter Island spent part of their summer designing a bicycle-powered generator, building wind turbines and even developing a desalination demonstration project.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_38696\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38696\" style=\"width: 332px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Easter-Island-generator.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-38696 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Easter-Island-generator.jpg\" alt=\"Bicycle powered generator\" width=\"332\" height=\"249\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2015\/09\/Easter-Island-generator.jpg 332w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2015\/09\/Easter-Island-generator-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 332px) 100vw, 332px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-38696\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">An abandoned bicycle becomes the platform for a generator designed and built by students.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The engineering track\u2014specifically, renewable energies\u2014was added this year to Shepardson\u2019s long-running work through <a href=\"http:\/\/terevaka.net\/\">Terevaka<\/a>, a non-profit educational outreach program he established after <a href=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/easter-island-experience-turns-researcher-toward-education-hope\/#.VeYVgdNVikp\">his own intensive research<\/a> on the island as an archaeologist.<\/p>\n<p>Seeing the need for young people on the island to connect with and preserve their <em>Rapanui<\/em> heritage, Shepardson chose more than a decade ago to intervene through a hands-on summer program. But on an island challenged for natural resources and feeling the pressure of tourism and modernization, it became clear that more needed to be done.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve seen a shift over the years on the island,\u201d Shepardson said. \u201cStudents are not only becoming more interested in local archaeology, history and culture, but they are also more aware of conservation and environmentalism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In response, Shepardson turned to his own recent interaction with the <a href=\"http:\/\/nau.edu\/cefns\/engineering\/mechanical\/research-and-labs\/energy\/education\/wind-for-schools\/\">Wind for Schools<\/a> program at NAU. Engineering graduate student <strong>Marilla Lamb<\/strong> adapted the program\u2019s curriculum to fit Terevaka\u2019s two-week summer workshop and the specific needs on Easter Island.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer first draft was right on the spot,\u201d Shepardson said. \u201cIt\u2019s experiential learning that I knew these kids would get into. Wind power, solar power and desalination are all pressing issues on the island.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The team grew to include Shepardson\u2019s brother, Dylan, a mathematics professor at Mt. Holyoke College; <strong>Matt Petney<\/strong>, an NAU alum who also helped with curriculum development; NAU undergraduate anthropology interns <strong>Madison Ledesma<\/strong> and <strong>Sara Sanford<\/strong>; and two undergraduate interns from Mt. Holyoke. Each of them spent at least some time on the island during the month-long project. Besides curriculum, Wind for Schools donated wind turbine kits.<\/p>\n<p>Once the summer program was under way, 14 island high school students camped together and went on educational field trips with the interns and Shepardson. During breakout sessions, the archaeology group endeavored to match place names from the island\u2019s oral tradition to the actual sites, while the engineering group worked on turbine and generator projects.<\/p>\n<p>Their work was presented to the community in an \u201cuncharacteristically fancy and formal\u201d ceremony, Shepardson said. About 80 people attended, representing 1 percent of the island\u2019s total population.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was the most incredible experience to see students perform when the pressure was on,\u201d Shepardson said. \u201cThey not only showed they had created a bike generator but they improvised knowledge of alternating current. Their parents were crying at the end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Students also demonstrated the generator operating a blender to staff at the Explora Hotel\u2014a strong supporter of Terevaka\u2014and the desalination demonstration was operated for staff in the hotel\u2019s kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe students even used scrap materials from a recycling yard to assemble a wind turbine that would have worked, in theory,\u201d Shepardson said. \u201cThey had only two blades and needed more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shepardson\u2019s long-term hope is that knowledge contributed by the students to a publicly accessible database will help preserve not just archaeological information, but also the students\u2019 ties to a fast-fading culture with origins deep in the island\u2019s mystique. And he hopes they will be more prepared to contribute to a sustainable future on the island while building their own careers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe idea is to inspire kids for what to study if they go on to universities in Santiago (in Chile) or elsewhere,\u201d Shepardson said. \u201cIt gives them a taste of higher education geared specifically to issues on the island and in their community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"search-results-excerpt-link\" href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/engineering-bridges-future-past-for-students-in-nau-professors-easter-island-outreach\/\">Archaeology and engineering point in different directions for students on an isolated, misunderstood island in the southeastern Pacific, but a summer program featuring both disciplines is bringing them closer to their cultural roots while opening a future of personal growth and environmental sustainability.
