{"id":37210,"date":"2015-06-11T13:21:21","date_gmt":"2015-06-11T20:21:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/?p=37210"},"modified":"2015-06-11T13:35:31","modified_gmt":"2015-06-11T20:35:31","slug":"juneteenth-celebration-returns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/juneteenth-celebration-returns\/","title":{"rendered":"Juneteenth celebration returns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flagstaff365.com\/venue\/detail\/330298331\/Murdoch_Community_Center_\">Murdoch Community Center<\/a>\u00a0will be thriving during the annual Juneteenth celebration which will\u00a0take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 20.<\/p>\n<p>Presented by NAU\u2019s Gold\u2019n Brown Jacks, the Coconino County African American Advisory Council and Southside Community Association, the celebration commemorates the 1863 signing of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.archives.gov\/exhibits\/featured_documents\/emancipation_proclamation\/\">Emancipation Proclamation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0free\u00a0family-friendly event is open to the public and offers\u00a0food, live music and prizes, along with activities, vendors and educational performances that illustrate the growth and development of the black experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere, with Juneteenth, we have a golden opportunity to embrace the past to better understand our future within the larger northern Arizona community,\u201d said\u00a0<strong>Frederick Gooding, Jr.<\/strong>, NAU Ethnic Studies assistant professor and co-founder of the NAU Gold\u2019n Brown Jacks.<\/p>\n<p>The Murdoch Community Center is located at 203 W.
