Student employee supervisors nominate outstanding student employees based on the student\u2019s work habits, communication skills, professionalism, initiative and contribution to the NAU community. The winning students received their awards during surprise presentations presided by Dean of Students\u00a0<strong>Rick Brandel<\/strong>, the selection committee and the student\u2019s supervisors and coworkers.<\/li>\n<li>More than 1,100 students, faculty and community members came together over the weekend to participate in the annual\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/main.acsevents.org\/site\/TR\/RelayForLife\/RFLCY15GW?pg=entry&amp;fr_id=66227\">NAU Relay for Life<\/a>.<\/strong>\u00a0Participants walked, danced and competed to raise over $84,000 to support the A<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-36417\" src=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Hope-Cure-NAU-Relay-300x201.jpg\" alt=\"Hope Cure NAU Relay\" width=\"221\" height=\"148\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2015\/04\/Hope-Cure-NAU-Relay-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2015\/04\/Hope-Cure-NAU-Relay-1024x686.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2015\/04\/Hope-Cure-NAU-Relay.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 221px) 100vw, 221px\" \/>merican Cancer Society. The funds are used to provide education programs, advocate for cancer research, provide services to cancer patients currently battling this disease and allow researchers to progress toward the end of cancer. NAU\u2019s Relay for Life is organized entirely by NAU students.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Harun Mehmedinovic<\/strong>, professor in\u00a0the School of Communication, was recently featured in <a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/3818802\/timelapse-sky-night-video\/\"><em>Time<\/em> magazine<\/a> for his project,\u00a0Skyglow. Using still photography and time-lapses, Mehmedinovic, along with Los Angeles filmmaker\u00a0Gavin Heffernan, are out to\u00a0capture the last remaining \u2018dark sky\u2019 locations and archaeoastronomy sites in North America. The project will culminate in an\u00a0image-heavy and educational book by the same name, highlighting the issue of light pollution. The project is also featured in <a href=\"http:\/\/cs.astronomy.com\/asy\/b\/astronomy\/archive\/2015\/04\/14\/new-project-explores-humanity-s-severed-link-with-the-night-sky.aspx\"><em>Astronomy<\/em> magazine<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>John Miscevich<\/strong>, electrical engineering major, and <strong>Davis Bedient<\/strong>, physics major, were named champions of the Axe\u2019d Student Chef Team Challenge after facing off against their opponents in the final round this week. Five teams of two were paired with an NAU Campus Dining chef to consult regarding recipe ideas, ingredients and exhibition. Miscevich and Bedient along with their chef mentor, <strong>Curtis Reed<\/strong>, advanced t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-36407 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Campus-Dining-Student-Chef-2015-AxedChamps-e1429745124413-300x132.jpg\" alt=\"Campus Dining Student Chef 2015 AxedChamps\" width=\"300\" height=\"132\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2015\/04\/Campus-Dining-Student-Chef-2015-AxedChamps-e1429745124413-300x132.jpg 300w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2015\/04\/Campus-Dining-Student-Chef-2015-AxedChamps-e1429745124413-1024x450.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>o the championship after presenting their first dish, an avocado stuffed chicken breast with green chile sauce, to the panel of judges at The DuB on April 9. For the final round, Miscevich and Bedient prepared chicken tacos topped with a tomato and leek salsa and paired with a spicy aioli stuffed artichoke that wowed the panel of judges. As winners they received a $500 donation to the food relief charity of their choice, Flagstaff Family Food Center, dining dollars, culinary tools and more.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chelsey Baca<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Tessa Powell<\/strong>, undergraduate students in the Athletic Training Education program, were selected to represent NAU at the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nata.org\/atec\">iLead Athletic Training Student Leadership Conference<\/a>\u00a0in Dallas. The students attended presentations with fellow athletic training students and were encouraged to engage throughout each presentation. Baca and Powell were thankful for the interactive experience. Both students left the conference with a better understanding of professional leadership and communication.<\/li>\n<li>Thirty students from NAU\u2019s <strong>Model United Nations<\/strong> club recently traveled to Los Angeles to participate in UCLA<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-36416\" src=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/UCLA-Spring-2015-team-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"UCLA Spring 2015 team\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2015\/04\/UCLA-Spring-2015-team-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2015\/04\/UCLA-Spring-2015-team-1024x681.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2015\/04\/UCLA-Spring-2015-team.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>&#8216;s Model United Nations conference.
