The building, with an auditorium and support services for international students, will have solar panels expected to produce more power than the building\u2019s requirements. The pavilion also is expected to earn Platinum LEED status.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNAU is committed to new construction being sustainable and earning a minimum of Silver LEED status,\u201d said NAU project manager <strong>Josh Spear<\/strong>, describing the U.S. Green Building Council\u2019s sustainability rankings. \u201cWe strive to make sure we do the best we can for the environment on every job.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The biggest building energy users are lighting and the heating, ventilation, air conditioning and cooling systems. Spear said a combination of in-floor heat, fans and vents will eliminate the need for forced-air heating. The lighting system will use solar tubes for magnifying natural daylight and electrical fixtures that require less energy.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_36369\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36369\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/International-Pavillion-.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-36369 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/International-Pavillion--300x225.jpg\" alt=\"International Pavillion\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2015\/04\/International-Pavillion--300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2015\/04\/International-Pavillion--1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2015\/04\/International-Pavillion-.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-36369\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Construction on the International Pavilion is underway with completion expected this summer. The more than 9,000-square-foot facility will include a 300-seat auditorium, lounge area art and game spaces and offices.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Spear and fellow project manager, <strong>Kai Kaoni<\/strong>, earned bachelor\u2019s and master\u2019s degrees from NAU and both men say they value the building\u2019s green construction processes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn my mind, sustainability is an important aspect of a great project because we need to consider environmental impacts for future generations,\u201d said Kaoni, who works for Flagstaff-based Kinney Construction Services. On the current project, Kaoni said they looked for material in close proximity to the site and worked to recycle construction waste.<\/p>\n<p>When NAU\u2019s International Pavilion is completed this summer, it will likely be the greenest building of its kind in the world, said <strong>Harvey Charles<\/strong>, vice provost for International Education. \u201cBy garnering Platinum LEED status and being net-zero, this building will respond to the imperatives of climate change,\u201d Charles said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"search-results-excerpt-link\" href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/first-net-zero-building-source-of-campus-pride\/\">Construction crews working on NAU\u2019s International Pavilion are enthusiastic about\u00a0the university\u2019s first net-zero facility, defined as a structure\u00a0with energy use equaling the amount of renewable energy created on site.
