She finished out the week by welcoming Arizona Sen. John McCain to campus on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Four NAU students joined the president in a discussion with Hualapai council members on current education challenges\u00a0on the reservation. The\u00a0Peach Springs Unified School District does not have a high school facility, therefore students must attend high school in Kingman or relocate to attend one of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/teachers\/classroommaterials\/lessons\/indianschools\/\">federally funded boarding schools<\/a> located throughout the West.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jewel Honga<\/strong>, 2014 Miss Indian NAU, performed with\u00a0the traditional Bird Singers and Dancers at the elementary school and joined her classmates and Cheng in a\u00a0discussion with K-12 students on the importance of education. Honga, who is Hualapai and Navajo, is majoring in management and will graduate in December.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/97411391@N08\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-35833 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/ChengandMcCain-263x300.jpg\" alt=\"President Rita Cheng and Senator John McCain\" width=\"263\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2015\/04\/ChengandMcCain-263x300.jpg 263w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2015\/04\/ChengandMcCain.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 263px) 100vw, 263px\" \/><\/a>During a two-day visit to Flagstaff, McCain met with Cheng\u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/senator-mccain-meets-with-nau-student-veterans\/#.VR7tVBPF9U8\">student veterans<\/a> to discuss the\u00a0experience of\u00a0transitioning from active duty to the classroom. McCain said he recognized that NAU&#8217;s faculty are experts in research related to forest health and water resources, two areas of concern for the future of Arizona.
