{"id":35526,"date":"2015-03-26T15:35:11","date_gmt":"2015-03-26T22:35:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/?p=35526"},"modified":"2015-03-26T18:56:47","modified_gmt":"2015-03-27T01:56:47","slug":"to-south-africa-via-chile-always-with-an-eye-on-the-sky","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/to-south-africa-via-chile-always-with-an-eye-on-the-sky\/","title":{"rendered":"To South Africa via Chile, always with an eye on the sky"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Three <a href=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/naus-trilling-finds-multiple-ways-to-get-a-fix-on-near-earth-asteroids\/#.VRSKcDvF914\">accepted research proposals <\/a>and the ongoing study of Sedna, the solar system\u2019s most distant object, comprise <strong>David Trilling<\/strong>\u2019s sabbatical output, and that doesn\u2019t count a family adventure halfway around the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m busy, and in a year\u2019s time I really might be shoulder deep,\u201d Trilling said from Cape Town, South Africa, where he\u2019s spending his one-year sabbatical from Northern Arizona University.<\/p>\n<p>Trilling and his family moved to Cape Town in July 2014 and will remain until June. He\u2019s being hosted at the South African Astronomical Observatory, from which he coordinates his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.saao.ac.za\/from-cape-town-to-hawaii-to-sedna-the-most-remote-observations-of-the-most-remote-planetary-object\/\">observations of Sedna<\/a> via a telescope in Hawaii, as well as University of the Western Cape. A minor planet in the outer Kuiper Belt, Sedna is a candidate for designation as a dwarf planet. Trilling is using several telescopes in South Africa for different research projects.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, Trilling\u2019s two children are attending a local public school, and his wife, <strong>Leah Mundell<\/strong>, is conducting research on immigration.
