The two answered questions about opportunities for new and continuing partnerships within the Flagstaff and northern Arizona communities.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Carole Mandino<\/strong>, director of the Civic Service Institute, and <strong>Erin Kruse<\/strong>, project director for NAU&#8217;s Senior Companion Program, have been invited to the Arizona regional forum for the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouseconferenceonaging.gov\/\">White House Conference on Aging<\/a>\u00a0on May 31 in\u00a0Phoenix.\u00a0The White House has held a Conference on Aging each decade since the 1960s to identify and advance actions to improve the quality of life for\u00a0older Americans. This marks the second year in a row that an NAU student has won the highest award at this international competition.\u00a0<\/span>Bergstresser\u00a0led a team of seven\u00a0NAU students, who spent the week representing the state of South Korea on a committee discussing international issues.<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><strong>Michael Zimmer<\/strong>, information security analyst, was featured in a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qualys.com\/customers\/success-stories\/northern-arizona-university-sets-new-standard-vulnerability-management\/\">Qualys case study<\/a>\u00a0about\u00a0NAU&#8217;s network security procedures and use of the Qualys Vulnerability Management and Qualys Web Application Security systems. The team is made up of first year student <strong>Tim Lane<\/strong> and two clinical year students, <strong>Brian Kummet<\/strong> and <strong>Fallon Damico<\/strong>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Ricardo Guthrie<\/b>, associate professor of Ethnic Studies, presented a paper, &#8220;Hollywood Speaks to the Movement: <i>Boycott, Selma<\/i> and the Hidden Transcript of Black Resistance,&#8221; during a Black History Month conference held last month in San Diego<\/span><span class=\"s1\">. The paper examines how feature films depict iconic figures from the civil rights movement, while challenging post-racial nostalgia of the current age. The essay has been submitted as a chapter in a forthcoming volume: <i>Civil Rights in the Post-Racial Era<\/i>, edited by Bennetta Jules-Rosette and Lorna Lueker Zukas of the African and African American Studies Research Center at the University of California, San Diego.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Jon Reyhner<\/strong>, education professor, was the featured speaker during Gonzaga University&#8217;s Rethinking Native American Education: Building Bridges symposium on March 21. He spoke about\u00a0the history of assimilationist education in the United States and culture-based education for American Indian students.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>NAU<\/strong>\u2019s online bachelor\u2019s in criminal justice has been ranked among the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nonprofitcollegesonline.com\/rankings\/best-online-bachelors-in-criminal-justice\/\"><span class=\"s3\">top 50 degree programs<\/span><\/a> of its kind by <i>Nonprofit Colleges Online<\/i>. The website evaluated many factors including affordability, accreditation, academic quality, student satisfaction and nonprofit status.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/media\/set\/?set=a.785455134843302.1073741831.121356124586543&amp;type=1\"><span class=\"s3\"><b>NAU\u2019s Logging Sports<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-35550\" src=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/LoggingSports-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"LoggingSports\" width=\"206\" height=\"275\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2015\/03\/LoggingSports-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2015\/03\/LoggingSports.jpg 540w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 206px) 100vw, 206px\" \/><\/b><\/span><\/a> team sent nine competitors to the annual conclave of the Association of Western Forestry Clubs in Arcata, Calif. NAU finished second overall and earned first place finishes in men\u2019s power saw, men\u2019s timber cruise and women\u2019s underhand chop events. The team also took home the Conclave Sportsmanship Award.<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><strong>NAU Fraternity and Sorority\u00a0members<\/strong> raised\u00a0funds and awareness for local social service agencies, people and programs during Greek Week 2015 including:\u00a0$3,000 for the family of Zaadii Tso, a toddler who\u00a0was killed in a car accident in Flagstaff;\u00a0$700 for the Kayla Mueller Foundation, a scholarship fund established in honor of NAU alumna and human rights activist Kayla Mueller;\u00a0$833 for Northland Cares, a non-profit organization that provides a full range of outpatient services for people infected with HIV\/AIDS in northern Arizona;\u00a0$833 for Hope Cottage,\u00ad a local women&#8217;s shelter in Flagstaff; and\u00a03,300 cans for Louie&#8217;s Cupboard,\u00ad an on-campus food pantry for students in need.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"search-results-excerpt-link\" href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/in-the-spotlight-march-27-2015\/\">Kudos to these faculty, staff and students Do you have a spotlight item to share with the NAU community?
