Haeuser\u2019s position will be filled on an interim basis prior to hiring a full-time replacement.<\/p>\n<p>Three students from the <a href=\"http:\/\/nau.edu\/Health-Services\/Health-Promotions\/Take-Action\/SHAC\/\">Student Health Advocacy Committee<\/a> presented to cabinet the committee\u2019s proposal to make NAU a tobacco-free campus. <strong>Caitlin Phillips<\/strong>, a biology major and leader of the Tobacco Initiative, <strong>Kelsey Pruett<\/strong>, biomedical sciences major and committee president, and <strong>Ashley Neppl<\/strong>, political science major and committee vice president, explained that if the <a href=\"http:\/\/nau.edu\/Health-Services\/Health-Promotions\/Alcohol-Other-Drugs\/Tobacco\/\">proposed policy<\/a> is adopted, NAU would join about 1,500 other campuses across the country, including the University of Arizona and Arizona State, that have banned tobacco products.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Liz Grobsmith<\/strong>, senior adviser to the president, and <strong>Ellen Vaughn<\/strong>, manager of the Office of Sustainability, introduced an NAU climate action plan from the <a href=\"http:\/\/nau.edu\/Green-NAU\/Coordinating-Committee-for-Campus-Sustainability\/\">Coordinating Committee for Campus Sustainability<\/a>. The comprehensive plan addresses sustainability issues from a variety of perspectives that are expected to enhance sustainable practices throughout campus. The plan intends to reduce emissions on and off campus; construct, operate and maintain buildings sustainably; create a zero-waste campus; and reduce water consumption. President Cheng said the\u00a0plan should measure return on investment as the university faces what could be a difficult budget year. The climate action plan\u00a0should be available soon.<\/p>\n<p>The election in early November sees the Arizona Legislature with the same makeup of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.azcentral.com\/story\/news\/arizona\/politics\/2014\/11\/12\/legislature-state-retain-partisan-makeup\/18952635\/\">Republicans and Democrats<\/a>. Flagstaff Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.azleg.gov\/MembersPage.asp?Member_ID=84&amp;Legislature=51&amp;Session_ID=110\">Bob Thorpe<\/a> will be the chair of the House Higher Education and Workforce Development Committee, said <strong>Christy Farley<\/strong>, vice president for Government Affairs and Business Partnerships. She also said Gov.-elect Doug Ducey most likely will unveil the state\u2019s budget in mid-January.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Laura Jones<\/strong>, associate vice president for Planning and Institutional Research, presented the President\u2019s Cabinet Report for November. The report contains an update on NAU\u2019s progress toward achieving ABOR\u2019s Enterprise Metrics. It also includes updates on application date and the budget.
