{"id":33650,"date":"2014-11-14T11:32:46","date_gmt":"2014-11-14T18:32:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/?p=33650"},"modified":"2014-11-14T13:43:17","modified_gmt":"2014-11-14T20:43:17","slug":"nau-president-inspires-female-cadets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/nau-president-inspires-female-cadets\/","title":{"rendered":"NAU works to grow number of female cadets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>President <strong>Rita Cheng<\/strong> and Army ROTC Cadet <strong>Alexandria Schultz<\/strong> got a glimpse into each other&#8217;s lives as women in leadership roles when they took their first ride on a Black Hawk helicopter this past weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Schultz learned about the role of a university president leading a large, multifaceted institution, and Cheng gained insights into Schultz&#8217;s\u00a0life as a cadet, and her\u00a0future in the Army\u00a0National Guard.<\/p>\n<p>Schultz graduates and becomes a commissioned officer in May.\u201cI work with a lot of female freshman and they have no idea of what to expect coming into the military. I think having strong women at the university and in ROTC will help them develop into leaders,\u201d Schultz said.<\/p>\n<p>Lt. Col.\u00a0<strong>Todd Hourihan<\/strong> wants to see additional female students joining the ROTC ranks at NAU. \u201cWe hit a high point with 30 females last year, and right now we are at 20, but I want to grow that population.\u201d There are 94 male cadets in the program and Hourihan wants the cadet ratio to more closely resemble the NAU population, where there are more women enrolled than men.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur colonel tells us that and he looks at the rank and doesn\u2019t see the gender,\u201d said <strong>Elizabeth Washko,<\/strong> an ROTC leader. In a meeting with Washko and fellow cadets <strong>Mary Thomas, Cassidy Hartman <\/strong>and<strong> Kathryn O\u2019Hanlon<\/strong>, a theme was the military\u2019s ability to provide a greater level of service when the ranks are more diverse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWomen are held to the same standards as men and are treated with equal respect,\u201d Hartman said. \u201cI want to go into aviation and I would love to be able to support men and women on the battlefield,\u201d Hartman said, referring to the Army\u2019s progression toward allowing women to apply to any military specialty.<\/p>\n<p>The female cadets said they are receiving excellent training in preparation for a changing future.
