{"id":33376,"date":"2014-11-04T14:35:16","date_gmt":"2014-11-04T21:35:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/?p=33376"},"modified":"2014-11-04T14:35:16","modified_gmt":"2014-11-04T21:35:16","slug":"new-exhibit-explores-navajo-resettlement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/new-exhibit-explores-navajo-resettlement\/","title":{"rendered":"New exhibit explores Navajo resettlement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new student-generated exhibit that examines the experience of resettled Navajo people through words, photos and short films will open at NAU\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/nau.edu\/NA-Cultural-Center\/Welcome\/\">Native American Cultural Center<\/a>\u00a0on Thursday, Nov. 13.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibit, titled \u201cDislocated: Stories from the Navajo New Lands,\u201d is based on field reporting by independent journalist Shelley Smithson and students and faculty from the School of Communication. It tells the stories of challenge, resilience, grief\u00a0and survival in the Navajo New Lands.<\/p>\n<p>Teams of students and faculty members made six trips to the New Lands with Smithson throughout the spring and summer to get to know the residents of the area\u00a0by conducting interviews, taking photos and shooting video.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was rewarding to take the students off campus and into the field where they could interact with a wide array of people in the New Lands and tell stories about issues of real impact in the community,\u201d said <strong>Peter Friederici<\/strong>, faculty mentor for the project and associate professor in the School of Communication. \u201cThat sort of field experience serves both the students and the people they&#8217;re interviewing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>NAU film student <strong>Mari Cleven<\/strong> said working in the field was an excellent opportunity to collaborate with professional journalists from all media, including print, photo and film. \u201cIt taught me how to balance the needs of all the varying methods of storytelling, giving me exposure to cultures, people and events I would otherwise not have had the chance to film,\u201d Cleven said.<\/p>\n<p>An opening reception for the exhibit will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, in the Native American Cultural Center.
