Using fire-scarred trees and statistical models, the authors obtained valuable insights regarding past fire frequency and fire spread on the Hualapai tribal lands. The study results will be useful for informing adaptive management throughout the region as climate warms.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ishmael Munene<\/strong>, associate professor of educational leadership, was\u00a0elected president of the <a href=\"http:\/\/asrfonline.org\">African\u00a0Studies and Research Forum<\/a>\u00a0at the\u00a0association\u2019s annual general meeting held in Denver. Munene will oversee the forum\u2019s five strategic initiatives: Female Members\u2019 Professional Development Support, The Members\u2019 Publication Support, The Members\u2019 Tenure and Promotion Support, The Partnerships with Africa and The Summer Institute for Graduate Students at African Universities during his two-year term.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Annette McGivney<\/strong>, senior lecturer in the School of Communication, won the silver award for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.regionalmagazines.org\/downloads\/Irma_winners_without_comments_2014.pdf\">Best Travel Feature<\/a> for her article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.regionalmagazines.org\/downloads\/competition\/AHM-2013-ctgy04B-Trav-Fea.pdf\">\u201cTo Hellsgate and Back<\/a>&#8221; featured in <em>Arizona Highways Magazine<\/em>. The award was presented\u00a0at the 2014 International Regional Magazine Awards in Portsmouth, N.H.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Michelle Miller<\/strong>, psychology professor and co-director of the First Year Learning Initiative, and <strong>John Doherty<\/strong>, instructional designer for the\u00a0e-Learning Center, have started a pilot program, <em>Attention Matters<\/em>, aimed at reducing student distraction. Faculty members can use the freestanding instructional module as an optional or required learning activity.
