{"id":32712,"date":"2014-10-02T09:48:33","date_gmt":"2014-10-02T16:48:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/?p=32712"},"modified":"2014-10-06T10:40:34","modified_gmt":"2014-10-06T17:40:34","slug":"nau-marks-disability-awareness-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/nau-marks-disability-awareness-month\/","title":{"rendered":"NAU marks Disability Awareness Month"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Conversations\u00a0and strategies for increasing inclusion will take place on Northern Arizona University\u2019s Flagstaff campus during Disability Awareness Month.<\/p>\n<p>October\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/2014-Disability-Awareness-poster-final.pdf\">lineup of activities<\/a> includes a wheelchair basketball exhibition, scavenger hunt, panel discussion and a film screening.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Matthew Wangeman<\/strong>, disability studies instructor, spearheaded this year&#8217;s events and will be a co-host for an\u00a0open discussion, \u201cEverything You Always Wanted to Know but Were Afraid to Ask\u201d with <strong>John McDermott<\/strong>, project associate with the Institute for Human Development.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt NAU we are trying to highlight that disability is a natural part of life and is not a tragedy,\u201d Wangeman said. \u201cIn fact, the diversity that disability brings to the world is a good thing and should be celebrated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wangeman said people with disabilities represent the largest minority group in the world, and they want to have the same access to the same opportunities as anyone else in order to reach their full potential.<\/p>\n<p>The theme &#8220;Diversity Matters, All Year Long&#8221; was selected by Wangeman to highlight that &#8220;we, as a community, need to see disability as part of the diversity that enhances the\u00a0community and that diversity needs to celebrated all year long.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s events, free and open to the public, are:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Phoenix Suns and Mercury wheelchair basketball exhibition<\/strong><br \/>\nNoon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11<br \/>\nHealth and Learning Center<br \/>\nCome watch the exhibition and\u00a0then give it a try. Demo chairs will be available for use.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Accessibility Scavenger Hunt<\/strong><br \/>\n3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17<br \/>\nLouie statute outside the University Union<br \/>\nJoin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/disabilitystudentadvisoryboard\">NAU4ALL<\/a> to explore the campus together and recognize\u00a0access issues.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>A Conversation about Disability: Everything you Always Wanted to Know but Were Afraid to Ask<\/strong><br \/>\n6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22<br \/>\nUniversity Union<br \/>\nPresenters Wangeman and McDermott will host a conversation on disability.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Panel Discussion: Contemporary Social and Media Representations<\/strong><br \/>\n4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23<br \/>\nHealth and Learning Center<br \/>\nPresented by the NAU Speech and Debate team and offering an informative panel discussion on media representation, education access and exploration of viable forms of inclusion for all people.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Film Screening: <em>Fixed: The Science\/Fiction of Human Enhancement<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 27<br \/>\nProchnow Auditorium<br \/>\nScreening of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fixedthemovie.com\">film<\/a> will be followed by a discussion with director Regan Brashear.<\/p>\n<p>Student advisory boards NAU 4 All and TASH@NAU, Student Activities Council, the Commission on Disability Access and Design, the Institute for Human Development, the Office of Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity and the Office of the President organized the event.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"search-results-excerpt-link\" href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/nau-marks-disability-awareness-month\/\">Conversations\u00a0and strategies for increasing inclusion will take place on Northern Arizona University\u2019s Flagstaff campus during Disability Awareness Month.
