{"id":32319,"date":"2014-09-19T13:58:16","date_gmt":"2014-09-19T20:58:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/?p=32319"},"modified":"2014-09-19T16:35:08","modified_gmt":"2014-09-19T23:35:08","slug":"brain-research-guides-online-classroom-design","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/brain-research-guides-online-classroom-design\/","title":{"rendered":"Brain research guides online classroom design"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With online enrollment on the rise and more teachers incorporating digital technology in traditional classrooms, Professor <strong>Michelle Miller<\/strong>\u2019s research offers practical ideas for instructors.<\/p>\n<p>The latest brain research can be used to design online information for better learning outcomes, said Miller. \u201cFor example, understanding attention drives a great deal of what we think and how we prioritize in the moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Miller\u2019s applied memory research uncovered methods for improving online learning; the testing effect improves comprehension with frequent low-stake tests. Other processes shown to improve retention include spacing, which is splitting up study time across more sessions, and interweaving or alternating between topics.<\/p>\n<p>Motivating students is another focus of Miller\u2019s research. \u201cHow do we get the students to turn on the computer and go to class instead of Facebook?\u201d Miller said course design improves student motivation in online classes, along with careful creation\u00a0of assignments to increase student\u2019s self-efficacy.<\/p>\n<p>Miller\u2019s findings are the topic of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hup.harvard.edu\/catalog.php?isbn=9780674368248\">Minds Online: Teaching Effectively with Technology<\/a>, <\/em>scheduled for release in October.\u00a0&#8220;The book isn&#8217;t so much a narrowly focused how-to guide as it is a conceptual framework for making instructional design choices that reflect the ways in which the mind takes in and structures information.\u201d Miller includes a chapter on how computing and mobile technology affect us psychologically.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"search-results-excerpt-link\" href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/brain-research-guides-online-classroom-design\/\">With online enrollment on the rise and more teachers incorporating digital technology in traditional classrooms, Professor Michelle Miller\u2019s research offers practical ideas for instructors.
