{"id":31453,"date":"2014-07-29T10:13:52","date_gmt":"2014-07-29T17:13:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/?p=31453"},"modified":"2014-07-30T11:20:39","modified_gmt":"2014-07-30T18:20:39","slug":"nau-ranks-among-bike-friendly-campuses-america","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/nau-ranks-among-bike-friendly-campuses-america\/","title":{"rendered":"NAU once again ranks among most bike-friendly campuses in America"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\">From checking out a free yellow bike for a casual ride around campus to making a swift arrival to class or meetings on a personal road bike, students, <span class=\"s1\">faculty, <\/span>staff and visitors at Northern Arizona University embrace a vibrant biking culture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Recently earning yet another spot at the silver level on the national bike-friendly campuses list, NAU has been recognized by the League of American Bicyclists for its continued commitment to promoting a bikable environment on the Flagstaff campus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The university has maintained silver status year after year based on five categories: the availability of education programs for cyclists and drivers; promotion and encouragement for cycling on campus; engineering that promotes cycling such as designated bike paths and innovative methods of accommodating bicycles; efforts to prevent bicycle theft and encourage motorists to share the road with cyclists; and evaluation and planning of cycling programs on campus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Bicycles are a critical mode of transportation at NAU and provide an easy and eco-friendly way to get around campus. The university actively encourages a biking culture through the free <a href=\"http:\/\/nau.edu\/green-nau\/yellow-bike-program\/\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>Yellow Bike program<\/b><\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/nau.edu\/Parking-Shuttle-Services\/Biking-on-Campus\/\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>bike registration<\/b><\/span><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/nau.edu\/Parking-Shuttle-Services\/Biking-on-Campus\/\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>locker storage<\/b><\/span><\/a> to protect bicycles from weather, and enhancements to the campus pedways including the addition of an east-west pathway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The university\u00a0first received recognition from the League of American Bicyclists in 2012.
