View President Haeger&#8217;s presentation from this week&#8217;s Arizona Board of Regent&#8217;s meeting by clicking on the image.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Northern Arizona University President <strong>John Haeger<\/strong>\u2019s presentation during this week\u2019s Arizona Board of Regents meeting in Flagstaff was punctuated by a standing ovation and overwhelming praise for his accomplishments during his 13 years as the university&#8217;s\u00a0leader.<\/p>\n<p>Regent <strong>Jay Heiler <\/strong>said it is\u00a0through Haeger\u2019s efforts that NAU has moved ahead in the \u201cmost trying of times to a much, much better position,\u201d having weathered $60 million in state budget cuts amid year over year enrollment increases, much of which is credited to the Pledge program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou look at Dr. Haeger and you see this extraordinary combination of humility and audacity, and it seems that that is exactly the combination that\u2019s needed to be a successful leader in higher education right now,\u201d Heiler said. \u201cJohn, you\u2019ve been such a standard bearer for that, and I think it has been the foundation and the key to all of the success that you\u2019ve realized, which you once again covered with great humility with a minimum of aggrandizement. It is really impressive what you\u2019ve done here and the state is a better place for your service.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Board chair<b>\u00a0Rick Myers\u00a0<\/b>echoed Heiler&#8217;s sentiments.\u00a0\u201cWords don\u2019t describe how much we appreciate everything you and your team have done,\u201d<b>\u00a0<\/b>he said.<\/p>\n<p>In what will likely be Haeger\u2019s final meeting with the board, he <a href=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/ABOR614.pdf\">touched on the transformation<\/a> in higher education and the evolution of NAU\u2014from innovations in education delivery\u00a0to private-public partnerships\u00a0to significant growth in Flagstaff and statewide\u2014and the challenges the next president should anticipate.<\/p>\n<p>Myers and Regent <strong>LuAnn Leonard<\/strong>, co-chairs of the NAU presidential search committee, <a title=\"ABOR announces Rita Cheng as Northern Arizona University presidential finalist\" href=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/abor-announces-dr-rita-cheng-northern-arizona-university-presidential-finalist\/\">announced Rita Cheng is the finalist for the role<\/a>. Cheng, who currently serves as chancellor at Southern Illinois University, will meet with the\u00a0campus and community at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, June 12, in Ashurst Auditorium.<\/p>\n<p>The board also approved NAU\u2019s proposal for the Student and Academic Services Classroom Building, to be constructed through a public-private partnership with American Campus Communities. Once completed in fall 2015, it will house enrollment student support services, classrooms and offices. The building will flank the west side of the San Francisco Street Parking Garage.<\/p>\n<p>Myers moved from board chair to treasurer for the coming fiscal year, passing the gavel to new board chair <strong>Mark Killian.\u00a0<\/strong>Heiler will serve as vice chair, <strong>Jay Patterson<\/strong> as secretary and student regent <strong>Valerie Hanna <\/strong>as assistant treasurer.\u00a0<strong>Kaitlin Thompson<\/strong>\u00a0completes her two-year term as a student regent\u00a0July 1, a position to be filled by\u00a0Arizona State University graduate student\u00a0<strong>Mark Naufel<\/strong>.\u00a0<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>ABOR will hold its next meeting Sept. 25-26 at the High Country Conference Center in Flagstaff.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"search-results-excerpt-link\" href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/accolades-ovation-haeger-last-regents-meeting\/\">Northern Arizona University President John Haeger\u2019s presentation during this week\u2019s Arizona Board of Regents meeting in Flagstaff was punctuated by a standing ovation and overwhelming praise for his accomplishments during his 13 years as the university&#8217;s\u00a0leader.
