At the event (pictured left to right) were Gen. Les Kodlick; faculty mentor <b>Meghan Warren<\/b>, associate professor of physical therapy and athletic training; Mary O\u2019Driscoll; Olivas; John Sprott; and Vice Adm. Robin Braun.<\/li>\n<li><b><b>T. Mark Montoya<\/b><\/b>,\u00a0lecturer of ethnic studies, was awarded the Student Support Services and First Generation Initiatives Outstanding Advocate Award. The award recognizes a faculty or staff member who has served as an advocate for first generation students at NAU.<\/li>\n<li><b>Geeta Chowdhry<\/b>, professor of political science, was posthumously awarded the NAU Commission on Ethnic Diversity President&#8217;s Award for Ethnic Diversity for the 2013-2014 academic year. The award recognizes significant individual contributions to the enhancement of ethnic diversity at NAU. Senior\u00a0<b>Demetri Kelley\u00a0<\/b>also was honored with the award.<\/li>\n<li><b>Jon Reyhner<\/b>, professor of bilingual multicultural education, and NAU alumnus\u00a0<b>Navin Kumar Singh<\/b>, compiled a bibliography on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.oxfordbibliographies.com\/view\/document\/obo-9780199756810\/obo-9780199756810-0064.xml\">Indigenous Education in a Global Context<\/a>\u00a0for Oxford University Press.<\/li>\n<li>\n<p style=\"display: inline !important;\"><strong>Timothy Smith<\/strong>, professor in the School of Music, won a MERLOT award from the Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning and Online Teaching\u00a0for \u201cThe Mass in B Minor\u201d on his website, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bach.nau.edu\/\">Exploring Bach<\/a>. MERLOT is a consortium of state university systems devoted to propagating a shared knowledge base of online learning materials. Primary partners include the University of Georgia System, Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education, University of North Carolina System and the California State University System.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/torch.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-30564\" alt=\"NAUPD participating in torch run\" src=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/torch.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2014\/05\/torch.jpg 450w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2014\/05\/torch-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>Members of the\u00a0<strong>NAU Police Department<\/strong>\u00a0took part in the running of the Special Olympics\u2019 Torch of Hope as it made its way through Flagstaff on Tuesday. Members of the\u00a0NAU Police Department, right, ran to the Flagstaff airport exit at Interstate 17, where the Arizona Department of Public Safety received the torch and continued the journey to Phoenix.<\/li>\n<li>\n<p style=\"display: inline !important;\">Two students who work for the Student Learning Center recently were selected as the winner and runner-up for Student Employee of the Year, an honor awarded by the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid.\u00a0<b>Nancy Hernandez<\/b>, a supplemental instruction instructor, was awarded the Student Employee of the Year award. <b>Joel Steiger<\/b>, peer math assistant\/tutor, was named the runner-up.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"search-results-excerpt-link\" href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/in-the-spotlight-may-2-2014\/\">Kudos to these faculty, staff and students Do you have a spotlight item to share with the NAU community?
