Wiist\u2019s review, written in response to an invitation by the publication\u2019s editors, is titled \u201cRisking the Public\u2019s Health, Exposing the Hidden Practices of Big Pharma and Big Food.\u201d The review is in the publication\u2019s \u201cSpeaking of Medicine\u201d blog, a new feature in the journal. Dawn Hawley<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Alan Lew<\/strong>, professors in the Department of Geography, Planning and Recreation, and\u00a0<strong>Amy Hughes<\/strong>, librarian at Cline Library, organized and presented a session, titled \u201cFood Planning for Healthy and Sustainable Communities,\u201d at the Arizona Planning Association annual meeting last month in Flagstaff.Lew also delivered a keynote presentation, titled \u201cCommunity-Based Tourism in Natural Areas: Sustainability, Life Cycles and Resilience,\u201d at the Taiwan\u00a0Outdoor\u00a0Recreation Studies Conference on Oct. 5 at National Dong Hwa University in Hualien, Taiwan. Lew also gave a presentation to students and faculty on\u00a0\u201cSustainability and Resilient Tourism: Malaysia and Taiwan\u201d on Oct. 8 at National Formosa University in Yunlin, Taiwan.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Lori Poloni-Staudinger<\/strong>, associate professor in the Department of Politics and International Affairs, was nominated by the Fulbright Commission to be a U.S. Scholar peer reviewer for the Austria regional review. She will serve a term from 2012-14 and travel to Washington, D.C., annually to evaluate and nominate scholars for Fulbright awards.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>P.H.C. Marchesi,<\/strong>\u00a0a lecturer in the English Department, received three awards from the 2012\u00a0Children&#8217;s Literary Classics competition\u00a0for her\u00a0book\u00a0<em>Shelby and Shauna Kitt and the Dimensional Holes<\/em>.\u00a0The novel won\u00a0Best First Chapter and was a\u00a0Gold Award Recipient in\u00a0the categories Fantasy Preteen and Science Fiction Preteen. The workshop was designed to help photographers gain a better understanding of composition, computer adjustments and how to photograph ancestral pueblo dwellings. Nogueras<\/strong>, associate professor in the School of Nursing, presented at the 18th\u00a0Annual\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/sloanconsortium.org\/conference\/2012\/aln\/welcome\">Sloan Consortium International Conference on Online Learning<\/a>\u00a0Oct. 10-12 in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. In a pre-conference workshop, Pedersen participated in a panel on \u201cUsing the Sloan-C Quality Scorecard for the Administration of Online Programs.\u201dPedersen also participated in the \u201cOnline Military Learners: What is \u2018Military Friendly\u2019?\u201d session. Norgueras\u00a0presented \u201cBridging the Generations: Civility in Online Education.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The<strong>\u00a0Sustainable Communities Program\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0compost pilot study kicked off in May and has already composted more than 85,000 pounds, resulting in more than 70,000 pounds of carbon dioxide equivalent reduction.The program is hosting a community tour from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27.
