{"id":29991,"date":"2014-04-11T14:37:20","date_gmt":"2014-04-11T21:37:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/?p=29991"},"modified":"2014-04-14T09:55:11","modified_gmt":"2014-04-14T16:55:11","slug":"spotlight-april-11-2014","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/spotlight-april-11-2014\/","title":{"rendered":"In the Spotlight: April 11, 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>Kudos to these faculty, staff and students<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Do you have a spotlight item to share with the NAU community?<\/p>\n<p>E-mail your announcements to\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:Inside@nau.edu\" target=\"_blank\">Inside@nau.edu<\/a>, or use our\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/news-tip\/\">online submission form<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Janet Crum<\/strong>, Cline Library\u2019s head of Library Technology Services, had an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eahil.eu\/journal\/2013V09\/N04\/journal_2013_vol9_n4_crum.pdf\">article<\/a>, titled &#8220;Emerging Roles Means New Opportunities,&#8221; published in the\u00a0<em>Journal of the<\/em> <i>European Association for Health Information and Libraries. <\/i>The journal&#8217;s editorial board also voted Crum&#8217;s article as one of the best two papers published in 2013.<\/li>\n<li><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-30008\" alt=\"LAMUN 2014\" src=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/LAMUN.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"254\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2014\/04\/LAMUN.jpg 450w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2014\/04\/LAMUN-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/>NAU took 50 members of its Model United Nations to the UCLA Model United Nations conference last weekend, where they debated a range of issues and topics.\u00a0Ten students, pictured left to right, won awards at the conference:\u00a0<strong>Spencer Troth, Connor Mullins, John Murphy, John Kelly, Nicholaus Schlegel, Claire Bergstresser, Caitlin Rynn, Sydney Cheifitz, Andrew Shepherd<\/strong> and <strong>Jeremy Arnaud<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Four NAU-Yuma social work students won an award for the best co-authored student paper from the Western Social Science Association. <b>Tim Arviso<\/b>, <b>Claudia Chavez<\/b>, <b>Veronica Nichols<\/b> and <b>Valerie Turpin<\/b> were honored for their paper, titled \u201cFriendly Visiting: A Community Change Project with Homebound Elderly,\u201d which they presented at the association&#8217;s annual meeting in Albuquerque last week. Several other NAU students also presented papers at the conference, including\u00a0eight graduate students in the <span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Applied Communication program and three seniors majoring in communication studies:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><b>David Pearson <\/b>presented \u201cOn the Fringe of Theology: Radical Presentations of Mormonism\u201d and \u201cWhat Roles do Mormon Women Play: An Analysis of the Experiences of Mormon Women.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><b>Ashley Garcia<\/b> and <b>Caitlyn Rogers<\/b> presented \u201cThe Theoretical Culture of Poverty: Counteracting \u2018The American Nightmare\u2019 with Positive Discourse.\u201d Garcia also presented \u201cThe Status of Crisis Communication Research.\u201d\u00a0Rogers\u00a0also presented with <b>Genevieve Burns <\/b>and\u00a0<b>Robert Moreno<\/b>\u00a0\u201cFinding One\u2019s Voice in the Public Speaking Course.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><b>Kayla McMinimy<\/b> presented \u201cUsing Communication Theories and Strategies to Persuade Lawmakers to Support Medicaid Expansion in Arizona.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><b>Katherine Kurpierz<\/b> and <b>Giovanna Fotino <\/b>presented \u201c\u2019Helping Granny Cross the Street\u2019: How Stereotypes of Seniors Keep Them in Poverty.\u201d Fotino also presented \u201cEscaping the Ivory Tower: Undergraduate Student Mothering in Academia.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><b>Amanda Brand<\/b> presented &#8220;Constructing Cyber Social Criticism: Value, Privilege and Critique in Internet Memes.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><b>Rachael Anderson<\/b> presented \u201cCommunication and Authority: An Analytical Comparison of Identity, Power and Communication in Law Enforcement.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><b>Rayanne Kruse<\/b> presented \u201cGrowing Green: The Green Movement Influence on Children\u2019s Picture Books.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Ricardo Guthrie<\/b>, assistant professor and director of Ethnic Studies, presented a paper, &#8220;The Real Ghosts in the Machine: Afrofuturism and the Haunting of Racial Space,&#8221; at the National Council for Black Studies&#8217; 38th annual conference, held in Miami March 5-8. The paper examines \u201cAfro-futurist\u201d responses to documentary and science fiction films which depict urban America as sites of decay and degradation\u2014reflecting racial fears projected onto futurist landscapes. The paper will be considered for a volume on \u201cAfrofuturism 2.0,\u201d a compilation of theoretical and conceptual analyses of race in the future.<\/li>\n<li><b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-29993\" alt=\"Amy Horn poster\" src=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Horn_Amy.jpg\" width=\"350\" height=\"271\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2014\/04\/Horn_Amy.jpg 350w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2014\/04\/Horn_Amy-300x232.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/>Amy Horn<\/b>, photography lecturer for the School of Communication, has a solo exhibit through June 2 at Brandy\u2019s Restaurant, 1500 E. Cedar Avenue in Flagstaff. &#8220;Delicate Details\u201d includes 33 photographs of everyday details from her travels as an instructor and volunteer for the Friends of Arizona Highways Photo Workshop organization. Guests can meet <a href=\"http:\/\/horndesigns.com\/\">Horn<\/a>\u00a0at the restaurant from noon to 2 p.m. April 12 and May 3.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jon Reyhner<\/strong>, professor of bilingual multicultural education, contributed material to the historical American Indian education timeline for a group of articles published in <i>Education Week<\/i>. The collection received a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ewa.org\/first-prize\/education-indian-country\">first prize<\/a> and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ewa.org\/third-prize\/education-indian-country-running-place-tie\">third prize<\/a> from the Education Writers Association.<\/li>\n<li><b>Suman Sirimulla<\/b>, lecturer in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, is part of a team of investigators awarded a $25,000 Proof-of-Concept Grant for Collaborative Research. The grant, from the Medical Center of the Americas Foundation, will support the design and development of therapeutics to mitigate Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in patients, with the primary focus being United States military personnel.<\/li>\n<li>During mid-March, a delegation from NAU went to visit a new partner\u2014the first in western China\u2014Xinjiang Agricultural University, in the city of Urumqi. This is the furthest west province known for its key role as part of the Silk Road and an important Muslim ethnic region reflecting the Uighur population. NAU President John Haeger had hosted XAU\u2019s vice president, Gao Fashui, as part of a delegation to visit NAU last fall, and upon their invitation, a group from NAU went to visit them and sign an agreement to explore consideration of dual degrees in business administration and engineering as well as faculty training programs. Members of the NAU delegation included <b>Harvey Charles<\/b>, <b>Liz Grobsmith<\/b>, <b>Paul Jagodzinski<\/b>, <b>Daniel Palm<\/b> and <b>Feng (Bruce) Wang<\/b>. In addition, the group traveled to meet with partners in Shanghai, Beijing, Weihai and Chongqing. Charles, vice provost for International Education, was a presenter at an international conference of the China Service Center for Scholarly Exchange.<\/li>\n<li>Four undergraduate students have been awarded the <a href=\"http:\/\/nau.edu\/CEFNS\/CSTL\/Degrees-Programs\/The-Robert-Noyce-Teacher-Scholarship-Program\/\">Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship<\/a>, which offers $15,000 to encourage talented science, technology, engineering and math majors to earn a teaching credential and commit to teach in high-need school districts. <b>Alexis Cottrell<\/b>, <b>Rebecca Hutchison<\/b>, <b>Sierra Rothlisberg<\/b> and <b>Allison Steinken<\/b> received the award and will participate in an induction program after they graduate for support during their first years of teaching to promote retention.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"search-results-excerpt-link\" href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/spotlight-april-11-2014\/\">Kudos to these faculty, staff and students Do you have a spotlight item to share with the NAU community?
