{"id":29689,"date":"2014-03-28T12:19:17","date_gmt":"2014-03-28T19:19:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/?p=29689"},"modified":"2014-03-31T09:57:04","modified_gmt":"2014-03-31T16:57:04","slug":"grad-student-david-mcneill-running-answers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/grad-student-david-mcneill-running-answers\/","title":{"rendered":"Grad student David McNeill running down answers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Even for a world-class runner, there\u2019s a lot to learn about the <a title=\"Whether for small steps or elite strides, treadmill gains an edge on gravity\" href=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/whether-small-steps-elite-strides-treadmill-gains-edge-gravity\/\">AlterG anti-gravity treadmill<\/a>, so <strong>David McNeill<\/strong> decided to make it the focus of his graduate research.<\/p>\n<p>Now on the verge of a master\u2019s degree in exercise physiology at Northern Arizona University, McNeill said he \u201ccan\u2019t wait to present the final results\u201d of a study involving who he calls \u201csix of the best athletes in Flagstaff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That assessment is high praise coming from an Olympian with two NCAA championships who was named No. 10 on a list of \u201c50 Greatest Male Athletes\u201d in the Big Sky Conference.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe data we were able to collect because of their unique abilities is pretty special,\u201d McNeill said.<\/p>\n<p>McNeill focused on the relationship between velocity and oxygen consumption at various levels of \u201cunloading\u201d\u2014effort, essentially\u2014on the AlterG, which allows runners to perform at less than their full bodyweight. The real question is just how fast they need to run.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan we simply plug in values to a single formula? It seems as though it might not be that simple,\u201d McNeill said.<\/p>\n<p>Much clearer is McNeill\u2019s appreciation of his pursuit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just been such a pleasure and thrill to be getting my master\u2019s doing research into something that has been such a huge part of my life\u2014running,\u201d McNeill said. \u201cFrom the athlete and researcher\u2019s perspective, it\u2019s exciting to be answering questions that could potentially help fellow athletes quantify how they train on the AlterG.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"search-results-excerpt-link\" href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/grad-student-david-mcneill-running-answers\/\">Even for a world-class runner, there\u2019s a lot to learn about the AlterG anti-gravity treadmill, so David McNeill decided to make it the focus of his graduate research.
