{"id":29529,"date":"2014-03-13T16:01:26","date_gmt":"2014-03-13T23:01:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/?p=29529"},"modified":"2014-03-14T09:11:58","modified_gmt":"2014-03-14T16:11:58","slug":"nau-theater-takes-site-specific-performance-la-posada","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/nau-theater-takes-site-specific-performance-la-posada\/","title":{"rendered":"NAU Theater takes on site-specific performance at La Posada"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_29530\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29530\" style=\"width: 450px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-29530\" alt=\"Bernarda Alba\" src=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/BernardaAlba.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2014\/03\/BernardaAlba.jpg 450w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2014\/03\/BernardaAlba-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-29530\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Katie Gardea, left, plays Bernarda Alba, and and Carter Conaway is La Poncia in NAU Theater&#8217;s site-specific production of &#8216;The House of Bernarda Alba&#8217; at La Posada hotel in Winslow.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Northern Arizona University\u2019s Theater Department will perform Federico Garcia Lorca\u2019s <i>The House of Bernarda Alba <\/i>in a rare, site-specific performance on the grounds of the historic <a href=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/legacy-of-la-posada-to-endure-through-bequest-to-nau\/\">La Posada Hotel<\/a> and Gardens in Winslow, March 28-April 6.<\/p>\n<p><i>Bernarda Alba<\/i> tells the story of a widowed and grieving woman and her strained relationships with her mother and five daughters\u00a0over the course of eight years, a period in which no one is allowed to leave her house.<\/p>\n<p>This performance will be the new adaptation of the play by\u00a0playwright Emily Mann.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I really love about this story is that there is this continual clash of generations,\u201d said director <b>Christina Gutierrez<\/b>. \u201cIt\u2019s a fairly universal story among families.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lorca\u2019s subtitle describes it as \u201ca drama of women in the villages of Spain,\u201d and the play\u2019s all-female cast weaves its story through La Posada\u2019s\u00a0stunning backdrop, beginning in the garden and progressing through the lobby, an art gallery and the ballroom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn most site-specific pieces, you are working to fit the story into the space and often have to improvise with design elements,\u201d Gutierrez said. \u201cThis story takes place\u00a0in a Spanish manor house, and the beauty of La Posada is that 99 percent of the space is perfect for this script.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The setting also provides for a more intimate audience experience, with only 40 seats available per show.<\/p>\n<p>Performances of <i>Bernarda Alba<\/i> are free, and take place\u00a0at 7:30 p.m., March 28-29 and April 4-5. Matinee performances will take place at 2 p.m. March 30 and April 6.<\/p>\n<p>Due to limited seating capacity, advance reservations are necessary.
