{"id":2919,"date":"2012-10-12T11:36:54","date_gmt":"2012-10-12T18:36:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www2.nau.edu\/news-p\/wordpress\/?p=2919"},"modified":"2013-01-30T16:09:12","modified_gmt":"2013-01-30T23:09:12","slug":"nau-adds-voice-to-research-that-calls-for-national-conservation-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/nau-adds-voice-to-research-that-calls-for-national-conservation-plan\/","title":{"rendered":"NAU adds voice to research that calls for national conservation plan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Northern Arizona University found itself among prestigious company in a collaborative course five years ago, and today the conclusions of research based on that experience have been published in a scholarly journal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA State-Based National Network for Effective Wildlife Conservation\u201d appears online in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aibs.org\/bioscience\/current_issue.html\"><em>Bioscience<\/em><\/a>\u00a0and includes as a co-author<strong>\u00a0Jacqueline Vaughn<\/strong>, an NAU professor in the Department of Politics and International Affairs.<\/p>\n<p>The distributed graduate seminar involved students from eight universities who took the same wildlife conservation course at the same time but independent of one another. Vaughn was one of the instructors, a \u201cpolicy wonk,\u201d she said, among faculty in conservation biology, forestry and other science fields.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNAU participated with some of the top conservation schools in the country,\u201d Vaughn said, naming Indiana University, Duke University and the University of Michigan, among others. \u201cIt was sort of a coup for NAU to be included.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What the faculty found, after years of compiling and analyzing data generated by the graduate students, was that state wildlife action plans are rife with inconsistencies and lack a comprehensive approach.<\/p>\n<p>Vaughn said that coordination has become more important because politics has not kept up with science.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere has been\u00a0<a title=\"NAU scientists seek landscapes to see if wildlife corridors work\" href=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/nau-scientists-seek-landscapes-to-see-if-wildlife-corridors-work\/\">research on wildlife corridors<\/a>\u00a0that cross boundaries, say from Arizona to Colorado, and that wildlife needs to be managed in a way that respects the fact that there are corridors that are biologically based rather than politically based,\u201d Vaughn said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat interested me as a political science and policy expert was now that we have science that tells us the corridors are there, what do we do politically to help manage these corridors?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Among the conclusions of the\u00a0<em>Bioscience<\/em>\u00a0paper, Vaughn said, is that a federal conservation plan would help to overcome the lack of coordination of state plans. In addition, some state plans were found lacking in public participation and partnerships with conservation organizations.<\/p>\n<p>Vaughn said she will try to track down the 18 NAU students who were involved in the seminar, in fields of study ranging from biology, to forestry, to political science to sociology.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to find out where they\u2019ve gone and what they\u2019ve done,\u201d Vaughn said, \u201cand make sure they get a copy of the article.
