Numerous studies have shown that students who live on campus the first two years of their collegiate life succeed at higher rates. Despite increasing on-campus housing by 1,500 beds in the last five years\u2014and 328 more next fall\u2014NAU is still feeling increased pressure for housing. Residence Life currently has about 8,500 students on campus, more than the universities of Arizona and Texas, Payne said.<\/p>\n<p><b>Harvey Charles<\/b>, vice provost for International Education, gave a presentation on the strength and importance of <a href=\"http:\/\/nau.edu\/CIE\/\">NAU\u2019s global outreach, education and programming<\/a>. Charles pointed out that international education encompasses far more than exchange programs and that NAU\u2019s global commitment impact students and educators across campus. He also praised computer science professor <strong>Eck Doerry\u2019s<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/developing-a-global-stem-workforce\/\">Global Science and Engineering Program<\/a> as an example of NAU\u2019s leadership in internationalization.<\/p>\n<p>The Arizona Board of Regents\u2019 recent <a href=\"http:\/\/azregents.asu.edu\/legislativeaffairs\/newsreleases\/Regents%20President%20-%20Arizona%20Needs%20Higher%20Education%20Competitiveness%20Package.pdf\">\u201cState of the Universities\u201d<\/a> was a well attended in downtown Phoenix, President <b>John Haeger<\/b> reported, adding that some legislators may remain skeptical about the universities\u2019 budget request.\u00a0 The Legislature also \u201cremains serious\u201d about performance funding, he added.<\/p>\n<p>President Haeger also announced that Robert Breunig, director of the Museum of Northern Arizona, and Jeff Trent, president and scientific director of Translational Genomics Research Institute, or TGen, will receive honorary degrees at <a href=\"http:\/\/nau.edu\/Commencement\/Fall-and-Spring-Schedules\/\">fall commencement<\/a> on Dec. 19.<\/p>\n<p><b>Astrid Klocke<\/b>, associate professor of Humanities and president of the Faculty Senate, said the faculty have requested that the regents include their input on the search for new NAU president.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"search-results-excerpt-link\" href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/cabinet-highlights-nov-18-2013\/\">Rich Payne, executive director for Housing and Residence Life, explained the university\u2019s move toward keeping more freshmen and sophomores in on-campus housing and moving juniors and seniors toward other accommodations.
