{"id":27665,"date":"2013-11-01T14:12:23","date_gmt":"2013-11-01T21:12:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/?p=27665"},"modified":"2016-02-20T12:10:07","modified_gmt":"2016-02-20T19:10:07","slug":"private-support-brings-public-success","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/private-support-brings-public-success\/","title":{"rendered":"Private support brings public success"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Just last month the university community <a href=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/nau-launches-100-million-fundraising-campaign\/\">moved into the public phase<\/a> of The Campaign for NAU. This is my first experience being part of an institution\u2019s comprehensive campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Like many faculty, I find this both exciting and a bit challenging; after all, I trained as a biologist, not as a fundraiser!<\/p>\n<p>But I\u2019m convinced of the campaign\u2019s value to NAU.\u00a0An \u201cah-hah\u201d moment came a few years ago, when the engineering deans (including me) from the three Arizona universities traveled with Bill Harris of Science Foundation Arizona to a large public university acknowledged as one of the nation\u2019s best engineering schools. The program really was fantastic, with world-class faculty and terrific partnerships with organizations providing great opportunities for students.\u00a0All of this is supported\u2014often very generously\u2014with philanthropic gifts much more than with state money.<\/p>\n<p>I was impressed that this university is not an elite private school like Harvard, nor is it located in affluent New York City or California.\u00a0Yet over time the institution has built relationships\u2014with alumni and with other kinds of friends\u2014who share and support the values and vision.<\/p>\n<p>My own experiences with alumni and donors have been enjoyable. It\u2019s exciting to learn what they are excited about and to help match their interests to opportunities for our students and programs.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nau.edu\/campaign\/\">The Campaign for NAU<\/a> is about partnering with those who want to help us keep supplying those special \u201cOnly at NAU\u201d experiences for our students.<\/p>\n<p>Exceptional student-faculty relationships led my husband and me to commit to establishing an endowment for undergraduate research and engagement opportunities.\u00a0I\u2019m looking forward to working with all the other generous individuals who are helping open doors for our students.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/nau.edu\/campaign\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-27471\" alt=\"Campaign logo\" src=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/campaign.jpg\" width=\"208\" height=\"113\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"search-results-excerpt-link\" href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/private-support-brings-public-success\/\">Just last month the university community moved into the public phase of The Campaign for NAU.
