Internationally acclaimed pianist <b>Jeffrey Swann<\/b>, captivating soprano <b>Deborah Raymond<\/b> and a panel of experts commemorate the 200th anniversary of Wagner\u2019s birth.<\/p>\n<p>Wagner\u2019s monumental music dramas, such as <i>Die Walk\u00fcre<\/i> (\u201cThe Valkyries\u201d), <i>Tristan und Isolde<\/i> and <i>Parsifal<\/i>, have spellbound audiences and inspired Wagner devotees for more than a century. Many share his conviction in the transformational power of art. Others consider his musical conceptions bombastic and his ideologies objectionable.<\/p>\n<p>Whichever the viewpoint, few remain neutral on the subject.<\/p>\n<p>At 6 p.m., five NAU speakers investigate Robert Schumann and Wagner\u2019s different musical paths (<strong>Julie Hedges Brown<\/strong>), Wagner and anti-Semitism in 19th-century Germany (<strong>Bj\u00f6rn Krondorfer<\/strong>), Wagner\u2019s dramaturgy (<strong>Nando Schellen<\/strong>), origins and mutations of the Wagner myth (<strong>Marilya Veteto Reese<\/strong>), and Wagner\u2019s legacy (<strong>Jeffrey Swann<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>The recital portion begins at 7:30 p.m. with piano compositions by Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric-Fran\u00e7ois Chopin and Franz Liszt, opera transcriptions by Liszt, Ferruccio Busoni and Ernest Hutcheson, as well as Wagner\u2019s touching song cycle, <i>Wesendonck Lieder<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Individual tickets for the Horizons Concert Series are $20 for adults, $12.50 for seniors and NAU faculty and staff, and free for children ages 17 and younger and NAU students with an ID.
