Click\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www4.nau.edu\/president\/budgetinfo.htm\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>\u00a0to visit the budget web site.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Speaking during a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tv.nau.edu\/president\" target=\"_blank\">campus forum<\/a>\u00a0at the High Country Conference Center, Haeger listed some\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www4.nau.edu\/insidenau\/bumps\/2009\/4_15_09\/CampusForum17.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">potential ways<\/a><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>the money could be used, such as mitigating the effects of furloughs or to purchase software that would enhance productivity and create a near-paperless campus.<\/p>\n<p>Haeger scheduled the forum to update campus on the university budget, including the cuts already made to contend with the budget reduction, which could grow worse in FY10.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the recent cuts made by all\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www4.nau.edu\/insidenau\/extra\/2009\/3_26_09\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">vice presidential areas<\/a>, including\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www4.nau.edu\/insidenau\/extra\/2009\/4_10_09\/budget.html\" target=\"_blank\">Academic Affairs<\/a>, the president outlined some revenue enhancements, which he said are necessary to continue to deliver a high-quality experience for students.<\/p>\n<p>NAU has proposed to add a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www4.nau.edu\/insidenau\/extra\/2009\/4_10_09\/tuition.html\" target=\"_blank\">$175-a-semseter tuition surcharge<\/a>\u00a0for students who are not already in the Pledge tuition guarantee program. It also will ask the Arizona Board of Regents to approve an IT fee increase to $36 a semester.<\/p>\n<p>An additional revenue source will be a new fee that will partially offset charges credit card companies levy against the university when students use charge cards for payments.<\/p>\n<p>Haeger praised a budget plan from Gov. Jan Brewer that would mix cuts with temporary tax revenues and a budget modernization plan. He also praised an \u201cexcellent\u201d report from the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/highereducationsolution.com\/assets\/upload\/file\/FACT_Report_-_FINAL_April_2_2009.pdf?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=Email+marketing+software&amp;utm_content=616924793&amp;utm_campaign=892+++2+Fiscal+Alternative+Choices+Team+Report+Released+_+hrhho&amp;utm_term=Click+here\" target=\"_blank\">Fiscal Alternative Choices Team<\/a>, which included\u00a0<strong>Marc Chopin<\/strong>, dean of The W.A. Franke College of Business, and NAU economic professor\u00a0<strong>Ronald Gunderson<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>FACT is a team of experts from Arizona&#8217;s universities and the Arizona Board of Regents, created at the request of legislative leadership, who identified alternative strategies that could address both the short-term deficit and also long-term structural budget issues.<\/p>\n<p>Amid continuing stress on state and university budgets, the president also discussed methods for educating more students at less cost per baccalaureate and in a shorter amount of time. He added that graduating more students with baccalaureate degrees cannot be done by sacrificing quality.<\/p>\n<p>He explained that Northern Arizona University could embark on creating \u201cregional universities\u201d that would be developed in coordination with community colleges and the local communities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe would build a strong regional partnership, using existing faculty, staff and buildings,\u201d Haeger said. \u201cWe also would seek broad regional support\u2014communities would need to come up with funding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www4.nau.edu\/insidenau\/bumps\/2009\/4_15_09\/CampusForum25.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">characteristics of a regional university<\/a><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>include structured programs, fewer electives and a hybrid delivery system blending onsite with online.<\/p>\n<p>Haeger cited NAU partnerships in Yuma and Yavapai County as examples of where a regional institution could develop.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"search-results-excerpt-link\" href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/following-large-cuts-nau-looks-revenue-enhancements\/\">The university\u2019s budget difficulties may be mitigated by federal stimulus dollars and other revenue enhancements, but important budget questions remain unanswered.
