{"id":26523,"date":"2007-04-11T08:32:03","date_gmt":"2007-04-11T15:32:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/?p=26523"},"modified":"2015-08-17T15:24:46","modified_gmt":"2015-08-17T22:24:46","slug":"directorprofessor-helps-students-delve-into-characters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/directorprofessor-helps-students-delve-into-characters\/","title":{"rendered":"Director\/professor helps students delve into characters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What<strong>\u00a0Bob Yowell<\/strong>, theater professor and director of the\u00a0<em>Grapes of Wrath<\/em>, enjoys most about his job is helping young actors delve as deeply as possible into their characters.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I enjoy studying plays and working with students on group play projects,&#8221; he said. &#8220;My favorite part of directing is working with good plays, often plays with social protest themes, and helping actors discover as much as we can about a character and how they can be best portrayed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Yowell, who has been teaching theater at NAU since 1993, previously served as director of the School of Performing Arts, was Faculty Senate president and Teacher of the Year.<\/p>\n<p>Seven plays he has directed have been selected for regional presentations sponsored by the Kennedy Center. One of these performances,\u00a0<em>El Paso Blue\u00a0<\/em>by Octavio Solis, was chosen out of a national pool to be performed at the Kennedy Center in 1994.<\/p>\n<p>Yowell said he chooses plays with social protest themes because of the value the arts can provide for humanity. &#8220;The arts can be a change agent in our lives,&#8221; Yowell said.<\/p>\n<p>Yowell is a Fellow of the American College Theater Center.
