{"id":26501,"date":"2013-09-12T10:04:20","date_gmt":"2013-09-12T17:04:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/?p=26501"},"modified":"2013-09-12T11:47:33","modified_gmt":"2013-09-12T18:47:33","slug":"nsf-grant-advances-career-and-educational-pathways-in-geospatial-technology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/nsf-grant-advances-career-and-educational-pathways-in-geospatial-technology\/","title":{"rendered":"NSF grant advances career and educational pathways in geospatial technology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Northern Arizona University has been awarded a $448,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to support career and educational pathways in geospatial technology.<\/p>\n<p>Through the Geospatial Connections Promoting Advancement to Careers and Higher Education, or GEOCACHE, project, NAU will partner with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mesacc.edu\">Mesa Community College<\/a> to integrate GST and project-based learning in new and existing courses, increase awareness of and training for GST-related careers through internships, outreach and industry involvement, and provide sustained professional development in GST skills for high school, community college and university faculty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis exciting collaboration with Mesa Community College will provide multiple entry points into the field for a diverse group of learners,\u201d said <strong>Lori Ann Rubino-Hare<\/strong>, professional development coordinator at NAU\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/nau.edu\/cefns\/cstl\/\">Center for Science Teaching and Learning<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Using GST to solve problems collaboratively not only supports a possible career, but enhances student achievement in STEM fields and provides 21st\u00a0century workforce skills, Rubino-Hare said.<\/p>\n<p>Assistant professor <strong>Mark Manone<\/strong>, who directs NAU\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.grail.nau.edu\/index.html\">Geospatial Research and Information Laboratory<\/a>, points to the wide-ranging application of GST skills. It\u2019s not just hard-science jobs that are out there, Manone said. The technology is being used in \u201canything that deals with location-based information,\u201d from city planning to business marketing. \u201cIt\u2019s an emerging field that\u2019s going to provide for career paths in diverse areas,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, the U.S. Department of Labor considers the field a high-growth industry and projects GST employment to increase 35 percent by 2020.<\/p>\n<p>A survey of Arizona employers who use GST, however, identified a deficit in key STEM and GST skill sets among potential and current employees.<\/p>\n<p>According to Rubino-Hare, the project will help to change this and ensure Arizona is ready to meet the GST workforce demand of the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNAU and MCC will see more students entering geospatial certification and degree programs, and industry partners will benefit from increased and better-qualified applicants,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"search-results-excerpt-link\" href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/nsf-grant-advances-career-and-educational-pathways-in-geospatial-technology\/\">Northern Arizona University has been awarded a $448,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to support career and educational pathways in geospatial technology.
