Abell Institute for Doctoral Students held at George Washington University last month. Bloom was one of 24 doctoral students selected to work with eight science education researchers from around the country. Communications Concepts recognized the publication as one of eight \u201cexceptional entries\u201d from 51 submissions in the annual contest\u2019s Print Magapapers and Newspapers category. Pilkington Advertising Design in Flagstaff designed the publication. APEX Awards are based on \u201cexcellence in graphic design, editorial content and the ability to achieve overall communications effectiveness and excellence.\u201d Information about the APEX Awards is available\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.apexawards.com\/\"><b>online<\/b><\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><b>Kristen Swanson<\/b>, professor for the School of Communication, has published a book chapter, titled &#8220;Souvenirs of the American Southwest: Symbols of Place and People,&#8221; in\u00a0<i>Tourism and Souvenirs: Glocal Perspectives from the Margins by\u00a0<\/i>Channel View Publications.<\/li>\n<li><strong>NAU students<\/strong> participating in a Native American cancer prevention program funded by the National Cancer Institute, National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health recently presented their research based on visits to health care facilities in rural communities.\u00a0Students in the program work with\u00a0<strong>Jani Ingram<\/strong>, associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry, whose research includes environmental exposure of uranium in Navajo communities and <a href=\"http:\/\/www4.nau.edu\/insidenau\/bumps\/2009\/10_2_09\/native.htm\">cancer disparities among Native Americans<\/a>.
