Gilbert serves as the fund&#8217;s president and has served on its board since 2001.The fund, which helps Hopi students pay for their educational pursuits, received &#8220;High Honors&#8221; as one of the top seven programs in Indian Country, and also received a $10,000 award.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a name=\"2\"><\/a>An article about the tallest redwoods, &#8220;Tall for its Age: Climbing a record-breaking redwood&#8221; by Richard Preston in the Oct. 6 issue of\u00a0<em>The New Yorker\u00a0<\/em>magazine, features the work of NAU ecologist and plant physiologist\u00a0<strong>George Koch<\/strong>.The article interviews numerous scientists, including Koch, and references his studies of redwood tree growth. Koch&#8217;s research reveals that some of the world&#8217;s tallest trees can be found growing on slopes as well as on flat ground. Koch reports that there might have once been 400-foot redwoods.Koch&#8217;s research to understand how redwoods move water through their branches and how that affects how tall the trees grow, was featured in the Feb. 14, 2005, issue of\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www4.nau.edu\/insidenau\/bumps\/2_16_05\/koch.htm\" target=\"_blank\">The New Yorker<\/a><\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a name=\"3\"><\/a>Donelle Ruwe<\/strong>, assistant professor of English, won a national poetry award, the second annual Camber Press Chapbook Prize for her entry,\u00a0<em>Another Message You Miss the Point Of<\/em>. Along with publication, Ruwe receives an award of $1,000. The collection is scheduled to be released in December.
