The Institute for Native Americans will kick off its sixth annual Native American Programs golf tournament with a reception at 6 p.m. Sept. 22 at Woodland’s Radisson Hotel. The golf tournament tees off at 8 a.m. Sept. 23 at Continental Country Club. The public is invited.<\/p>\n
Sponsors, golfers and contributors to silent auction fundraiser are being sought.<\/p>\n
“We get support for the event from NAU alumni, local and statewide businesses and tribes,” saidLaurence Gishey<\/strong>, director of the Institute for Native Americans. “This support helps us help Native students facing unexpected costs when entering college or returning to it. We want our students to start off on a positive note, so we are turning to our alumni and the business community for assistance.”<\/p>\n This is the first year the tournament includes a reception. It will feature a Native arts and crafts sale and a silent auction.<\/p>\n According to Gishey, more than 1,300 Native American students enrolled at NAU this fall. Each year the golf tournament, led by NAU alumnus\u00a0Harry Sloan<\/strong>, raises enough money to provide emergency financial assistance to 27 Native American students and supports four scholarships: the Virgil Masayesva Memorial Scholarship, the Audrey Tsosie Memorial Scholarship, Miss Indian NAU Scholarship, and the Miss Indian NAU Runner-up Scholarship.<\/p>\n For information or to register, go to\u00a0nau.edu\/ina\/golf<\/a>\u00a0or contact NAU’s Institute for Native Americans at (928) 523-9557.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
