Murrow journalism awards. The winning entries will now compete against other regional winners for national Murrow awards, to be presented in June. The four winners in the five-state Intermountain West Region include:<\/li>\n<p><P><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Overall writing:<strong>\u00a0Gillian Ferris Kohl\u00a0<\/strong>for her piece\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/knau.org\/post\/ponderosa-pollen-messy-business\">Pollen Blizzard.<\/a>\u00a0This is the fourth year Kohl has won the award for best overall writing.<\/li>\n<li>Feature:<strong>\u00a0Laurel Morales<\/strong>, KNAU\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fronterasdesk.org\/about\/member-stations\/\">Fronteras Desk<\/a>\u00a0correspondent, for her piece\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.knau.org\/post\/blind-youth-see-grand-canyon\">Blind Youth See the Grand Canyon.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Newscast: January 10, 2010, newscast the morning after Congresswoman Gabriel Giffords was shot outside of a Tucson grocery store.<\/li>\n<li>Reporting Hard News:\u00a0<strong>Daniel Kraker<\/strong>, KNAU alumnus, for his story on the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.knau.org\/post\/census-shows-steady-growth-native-american-population-over-past-ten-years-southwest\">Navajo Census<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the last eight years, KNAU has won 46 regional Murrow awards and four national awards.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Eric Otenyo<\/strong>, professor of politics and international affairs, recently was appointed associate editor of the peer-reviewed\u00a0<em>International Journal of the Academy of Organizational Behavior Management<\/em>\u00a0by the International Academy of Organizational Behavior Management. He also serves on the editorial board of\u00a0<em>The International Journal of Management Science and Information Technology<\/em>, the official publication of the North American Institute of Science and Information Technology, and the\u00a0<em>International Journal of Services, Economics and Management.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ricardo Guthrie<\/strong>, assistant professor of ethnic studies, organized a panel and presented a paper, \u201cNot Just\u00a0<em>The Help:<\/em>\u00a0Black Women\u2019s Resistance and Activism,\u201d at the 36th annual conference of the National Council for Black Studies last month in Atlanta. The panel examined the role of black women in developing resistance, activism and independent voices during the Jim Crow to Civil Rights era (late-1890s to 1960s), as expressed through literary imaginings, pop culture and political activism. Guthrie\u2019s paper compared the historical record of black women\u2019s resistance to cinematic treatments such as\u00a0<em>The Help<\/em>, based on the fictional novel of the same title.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Linda Robyn<\/strong>, professor of criminology and criminal justice, recently published the article, \u201cState-Corporate Crime on the Navajo Nation: The Legacy of Uranium Mining,\u201d in the\u00a0<em>Journal of Indigenous Studies Network.<\/em>\u00a0The article is available\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/indigenouspolicy.org\/Articles\/VolXXIINo3\/StateCorporateCrimeontheNavajoNationALega\/tabid\/227\/Default.aspx\">online<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Barbara Torre Veltri<\/strong>, assistant professor of education, recently published \u201cEducator Abroad: Teaching (Insegnare) and Learning (Imparare) with Italian Children,&#8221; in\u00a0<em>Social Studies and the Young Learner<\/em>. The article abstract is available\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.scribd.com\/doc\/86363383\/Educator-Abroad-Teaching-Insegnare-and-Learning-Imparare-with-Italian-Children%E2%80%94Social-Studies-and-the-Young-Learner-March-2012\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Faculty and students from the department of physics and astronomy recently participated in the 43rd Lunar and Planetary Science Conference in the The Woodlands, Texas.<\/li>\n<p><P><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Nadine Barlow<\/strong>, professor, presented &#8220;Distribution and Characteristics of Martian Low Aspect Ratio Layered Ejecta (LARLE) Craters.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Christine Atkins<\/strong>, graduate student, presented &#8220;Impact Crater Morphologies as Indicators of Volatiles in Northeastern Arabia Terra, Mars.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Margaret Landis<\/strong>, undergraduate student, presented &#8220;Analysis of Impact Craters in the 0-20N 0-30E Region of Arabia Terra, Mars, and Implications for Volatiles.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Christopher Mount<\/strong>, graduate student, presented &#8220;Time Evolution and Inter-Annual Variability of Seasonal Ice on the Mars Northern Polar Cap.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Faculty and students in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences participated in the National Ethnic Studies Association\u2019s 40th annual conference this month in New Orleans.<\/li>\n<p><P><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>T. Mark Montoya,\u00a0<\/strong>instructor of ethnic studies, presented a paper, \u201cI Could Be Illegal: The Citizenship Regime and Other-Americans in the U.S.-Mexico Borderlands,\u201d and chaired a panel, \u201cMediating Citizenship and Ideology among Latino\/a Populations.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bryan Kimoto<\/strong>, senior philosophy major, presented a paper, \u201cRecasting Identity: Counter-Hegemonic Views of the Self.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dana Krementz<\/strong>, junior biology major, presented a paper, \u201cSubjected to the Border: How the Material Border Produces Disposable Subjects.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nathania Garcia<\/strong>, senior sociology major, presented a paper, \u201cDeconstructing Control: Citizenship for Undocumented and Queer Identities.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Montoya also presented a paper, \u201cWhen Injustice Becomes Law: Border Politics and the Banning of Ethnic Studies in Arizona;\u201d chaired a panel, \u201cInjustice, Information and Nativism;\u201d and was a respondent for a panel, \u201cBorderlands Short Films,\u201d at the Association for Borderlands Studies annual meeting and Western Social Science Association 54th annual conference last week in Houston, Texas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Wendy Garrison<\/strong>, solution center team lead in ITS, and\u00a0<strong>Gretchen Wesbrock<\/strong>, assistant director in residence life, were presented with this year\u2019s leadership award by the Service Professional Advisory Council at its annual meeting this week.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2380\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2380\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2380\" title=\"spotlight\" src=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/spotlight-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Susan Maestas and Lyndsey Fox\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2012\/10\/spotlight-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2012\/10\/spotlight.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2380\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Susan Maestas, mail services supervisor, left, nominated Lyndsey Fox, undergraduate student and employee of Postal Services, for the 2012 Student Employee of the Year award.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Lyndsey Fox<\/strong>, an undergraduate student majoring in geology and history, was selected as NAU\u2019s Student Employee of the Year for 2012. Fox has worked for three years as a student employee for NAU Postal Services and will graduate in December.
