{"id":2366,"date":"2012-09-28T15:30:49","date_gmt":"2012-09-28T22:30:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www2.nau.edu\/news-p\/wordpress\/?p=2366"},"modified":"2012-10-29T14:27:34","modified_gmt":"2012-10-29T21:27:34","slug":"regents-approve-university-budget-requests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/regents-approve-university-budget-requests\/","title":{"rendered":"Regents approve university budget requests"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Arizona Board of Regents has approved FY14 operating budget requests from the three state universities and will submit a system-wide request to the governor by Oct. 1.<\/p>\n<p>Included in the Regents\u2019 overall request are two distinct components: base adjustments of $81.9 million and one-time adjustments of $120.9 million.<\/p>\n<p>Northern Arizona University is asking for one-time funding of $41 million for building renewal, instructional innovation and for hiring more tenured and tenure-track faculty.<\/p>\n<p>NAU President<strong>\u00a0John Haeger\u00a0<\/strong>also said the institution is working to increase faculty and staff salaries. \u201cHiring tenure and tenure-track faculty and bringing faculty and staff close to market is absolutely necessary or we can\u2019t compete with our peer institutions,\u201d Haeger said.<\/p>\n<p>NAU is seeking $15 million for fire, life and safety upgrades for the most \u201cdesperate needs\u201d of the university. \u201cThe situation is getting worse,\u201d Haeger said.<\/p>\n<p>The university\u2019s instructional innovation request includes $5 million to increase the capacity of the\u00a0<a title=\"New formula for mathematics success on display during Gov. Brewer visit\" href=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/new-formula-for-mathematics-success-on-display-during-gov-brewer-visit\/\">Lumberjack Mathematics Center<\/a>, which is anticipated to grow from helping 2,000 students to 4,000 and to create more highly interactive courses.<\/p>\n<p>Haeger said he is also asking for funding to immediately launch an occupational therapy program for the downtown Phoenix Biomedical Center, which already houses graduate programs in physical therapy and physician assistant.<\/p>\n<p>Requests from the other institutions include a one-time adjustment of $15 million the University of Arizona; $35 million for Hayden Library renovations at Arizona State University; and soft-capital requests for advancing clinical and translational medical sciences at the UA for $40 million; learning technology platform enhancements at ASU for $7.8 million; and $3 million for exploratory funding for a veterinary medicine program at the UA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are mindful that the state has a number of variables to consider as it formulates next year\u2019s budget and we believe the universities\u2019 official budget requests reflect the realities of the current economic conditions,\u201d said ABOR Chair Rick Myers. \u201cWe urge that higher education be considered among the highest priorities given our connection to workforce development, job creation, and overall statewide economic impact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The full Arizona University System fiscal year 2014 budget request is\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/azregents.asu.edu\/boardbook\/Board%20Agenda%20Books\/2012-09%20Board%20Meeting\/2012-09%20board%20book.pdf#page=31\">available online<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"search-results-excerpt-link\" href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/regents-approve-university-budget-requests\/\">The Arizona Board of Regents has approved FY14 operating budget requests from the three state universities and will submit a system-wide request to the governor by Oct. 1.
