{"id":22671,"date":"2006-06-21T11:21:04","date_gmt":"2006-06-21T18:21:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/?p=22671"},"modified":"2015-08-17T15:05:28","modified_gmt":"2015-08-17T22:05:28","slug":"native-american-student-services-director-named","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/native-american-student-services-director-named\/","title":{"rendered":"Native American Student Services director named"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Catherine Talakte, a Hopi from the village of Kykotsmovi and the Sparrow Hawk Clan, has accepted the position as NAU&#8217;s director of Native American Student Services, effective immediately.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My vision is to strive for NAU to become a national model for the retention of Native American students,&#8221; said Talakte, who has served as interim director since May 2005.<\/p>\n<p>Talakte&#8217;s goals include implementing a supplemental freshman and transfer student orientation for Native students, adding scholarship programs, growing fundraising activities to assist students and heightening the university&#8217;s visibility among tribes, communities and families.<\/p>\n<p>Since 1987, Talakte has held various positions assisting Native students at NAU.
