{"id":22384,"date":"2006-05-10T13:16:56","date_gmt":"2006-05-10T20:16:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/?p=22384"},"modified":"2015-08-17T14:59:31","modified_gmt":"2015-08-17T21:59:31","slug":"graduates-ready-to-teach-spanish","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/graduates-ready-to-teach-spanish\/","title":{"rendered":"Graduates ready to teach Spanish"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The first five graduates to receive a master of arts in teaching Spanish from Northern Arizona University are ready to toss their caps in the celebratory air during commencement this Friday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kirsten McCarty<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Chris Wargo<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Jonathan Dettman<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Claudia Serrano<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Patricia Swartzendruber\u00a0<\/strong>will not only celebrate their own success, but the success of their program\u2014the only Master of Arts in Teaching Spanish program in Arizona.<\/p>\n<p>Started in 2004, the goal of the program has been &#8220;to develop second language Spanish teachers at the secondary level,&#8221; said\u00a0<strong>Cecilia Ojeda<\/strong>, graduate coordinator and associate professor in the Department of Modern Languages.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As graduate teaching assistants, the students taught introductory Spanish classes while concurrently taking courses in linguistics, pedagogy and literature,&#8221; Ojeda said. &#8220;Their successful teaching experience at NAU attests to their hard work and enthusiasm as well as the quality of the program.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dettman will join the Latin American Literatures and Cultures Ph.D. program at the University of California. McCarty will continue teaching Spanish online at NAU. Serrano plans to become a graduate student pursing a degree in bilingual\/multicultural education.
