The team was selected to present about Northern Arizona University&#8217;s\u00a0<a title=\"First-Year Learning Initiative puts effort into student success\" href=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/first-year-learning-initiative-puts-effort-into-student-success\/\">First Year Learning Initiative<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Students and faculty members from the School of Communication participated in the Arizona Communication Association meeting held at Glendale Community College on March 31.<br \/>\n<P><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Marie Baker-Ohler<\/strong>, senior lecturer, received the association\u2019s &#8220;Arizona Communication Educator of the Year Award.&#8221; She also was invited to continue serving as president of the board for another year because of her outstanding leadership in the association. Baker-Ohler&#8217;s CST 498 capstone students presented a\u00a0poster session\u00a0of their scholarship for the semester.<\/li>\n<li>Faculty members\u00a0<strong>Dayle Hardy-Short<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Daniel Foster<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Brant Short<\/strong>\u00a0chaired sessions at the meeting.<\/li>\n<li>Several undergraduate students presented papers at the meeting:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Alexandra Corcoran<\/strong>\u00a0presented \u201cA Critique and Analysis of Robert H. Jackson\u2019s Opening Statement at the Nuremberg Trials.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Miranda Coates\u00a0<\/strong>presented &#8220;President-Elect Obama Gives a Speech of Hope and Change.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jennifer Green\u00a0<\/strong>presented &#8220;&#8216;Challenger Address&#8217;: An Analysis of President Reagan&#8217;s Speech to the Nation after the Challenger Disaster.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Caitlin Long<\/strong>\u00a0presented \u201cPropagating the Paranoia: The Paranoid Style in Conservative Political Rhetoric.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Several graduate students in the applied communication program also presented papers:<\/li>\n<li><strong>Helena Squier<\/strong>\u00a0presented \u201cThis Is So Going On My Blog: LiveJournal, Russia, and the Crisis of Internet Downtime.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rene Baca<\/strong>\u00a0presented \u201cCommunication and Christian Mediation: An Exploration of Theory and Practice.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tracey Powers<\/strong>\u00a0presented \u201cReconceptualizing the Group Communication Course for the 21st Century.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tyler Rising<\/strong>\u00a0presented \u201cEnvironmental Arguments in Favor and Against Hunting.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rebecca Reategui<\/strong>\u00a0presented \u201cA Romaine Lettuce Recall: An Attempt at Image Restoration.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ethan Riley<\/strong>\u00a0presented \u201cGateway Loop Trail: Rhetoric of Tight Places, Open Spaces.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Johan Bodaski<\/strong>\u00a0presented \u201c\u2018The American Scholar&#8217;: Ralph Waldo Emerson\u2019s Jeremiad of Americanism.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Kevin Snyder<\/strong>, a recent graduate of the program, presented \u201cGlobal Warming and the Risen Lord: An Analysis of Evangelical Climate Change Rhetoric.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Deborah Huntzinger<\/strong>, assistant professor of climate science in the School of Earth Sciences and Environmental Sustainability, recently published \u201cNorth American Carbon Program Regional Interim Synthesis: Terrestrial Biospheric Model Intercomparison,\u201d in the journal\u00a0<em>Ecological Modelling<\/em>. The North American Carbon Program recently organized several interim-synthesis activities to evaluate and inter-compare models and observations at local to continental scales from 2000 through 2005. Huntzinger\u2019s work compares the results from the terrestrial biospheric models collected as part of this activity in order to assess current understanding of the terrestrial carbon cycle in North America.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ricardo Guthrie<\/strong>, assistant professor of ethnic studies, made two presentations about his historical research and creation of a public mural, addressing gatherings at the Flagstaff NAACP\u2019s annual luncheon in December 2011, and at the Cogdill Recreation Center\u2019s Black History Month forum Feb. 29. Guthrie\u2019s presentations, titled \u201cFrom Segregation to Congregation,\u201d discussed how his research and artwork were reflected in the mural at the Murdoch Community Center in Flagstaff.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Jason Hess<\/strong>, associate professor of art, had three pieces selected for the juried art show, &#8220;Ink &amp; Clay 38,&#8221; a national competition for\u00a0ceramics, printmaking and drawing. Hess was one of 43 artists accepted out of 163 applicants and received a jurors cash award for his piece\u00a0<em>7 Tall Bottles<\/em>. Hess also has a major solo exhibition on display April 6-29 at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/plinthgallery.com\/exhibitions\/2012\/1\/17\/april-2012-jason-hess-new-work.html\">Plinth Gallery<\/a>\u00a0in Denver, Colo.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Martin Kalb<\/strong>, instructor of history, has been awarded a fellowship for a month\u2019s study at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., this summer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Rudy Dawahoya, Jr.,<\/strong>\u00a0an NAU art student and member of the Hopi tribe, is the winner of an art contest for the cover design of the book\u00a0<em>Native American College and Career Success<\/em>\u00a0by Marsha Fralick, Bea Zamora and Larry Gauthier.\u00a0His art, which he titled &#8220;Filled Life,&#8221; includes the Snow Katcina Mother\u00a0(Nuvaktsinmana)\u00a0in the center of the clouds, composed of Hopi\u00a0pottery and textile designs, which he said signifies \u201cher beauty and significance.\u00a0She appears during the Niman (Home Dance) katcinam\u00a0of late summer\u00a0to summon a good snow season for the upcoming planting season.&#8221; The book is designed to improve student retention and success for Native American college students and will be available in June.\u00a0An approximation of the cover can be seen\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.collegesuccess1.com\/NativeAmerican.htm\">online<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"search-results-excerpt-link\" href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/in-the-spotlight-april-04-2012\/\">Kudos to these faculty, staff and students Do you have a spotlight item to share with the NAU community?
