Jan Brewer has appointed NAU President\u00a0<strong>John Haeger<\/strong>\u00a0to serve on the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www4.nau.edu\/insidenau\/bumps\/2010\/7_7_10\/PR_062910_BrewerEstablishesNewAZCommerceAuthority.pdf\">Arizona Commerce Authority<\/a>, a board tasked with focusing on the state\u2019s economy through expansion and retention of businesses, entrepreneurship and workforce program development. The quasi-public board was created to fulfill Brewer\u2019s initiative of reshaping the state\u2019s existing Department of Commerce.<\/p>\n<p>Brewer\u2019s shift in strategy to address Arizona\u2019s economic recovery entrusts commerce development to successful business and community leaders, and is expected to result in new partnerships between regional economic development groups, private employers, state government officials and higher education institution leaders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am grateful for Gov. Brewer\u2019s continued support of higher education, her recognition of our role in the success of this state and our inclusion in this economic initiative,\u201d Haeger said. \u201cNorthern Arizona University is a natural partner in this state\u2019s effort to build a strong economy. As the needs of our global market evolve, NAU will continue to provide opportunities for students to gain necessary skills to contribute to the betterment of the state\u2019s economic future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>State higher education institutions are a vital resource in remaining competitive in a global market, Haeger said. Through essential and specialized research, technological advancements and business development, the state\u2019s universities are an integral part of Arizona\u2019s financial recovery strategy.<\/p>\n<p>Chaired by Brewer, the board is\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/phoenix.bizjournals.com\/phoenix\/stories\/2010\/06\/28\/daily47.html\">comprised<\/a>\u00a0of more than 30 private-sector executives and legislative leaders including Arizona Cardinals president Michael Bidwill, Motor Excellence CEO Michael Manson and Science Foundation Arizona CEO Bill Harris.
