{"id":20176,"date":"2010-06-30T09:32:46","date_gmt":"2010-06-30T16:32:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/?p=20176"},"modified":"2013-06-13T14:57:41","modified_gmt":"2013-06-13T21:57:41","slug":"hopi-footprints-project-to-be-featured-at-weekend-festival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/hopi-footprints-project-to-be-featured-at-weekend-festival\/","title":{"rendered":"Hopi Footprints project to be featured at weekend festival"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Museum of Northern Arizona will be brimming with all things Hopi this weekend during its 77th annual Hopi Festival of Arts and Culture, including an engaging exhibit that highlights NAU\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/?p=20177&amp;preview=true\">Hopi Footprints<\/a>\u00a0project.<\/p>\n<p>Hopi Footprints addresses the tribe\u2019s challenging task of retaining its distinct cultural identity while preparing its youth for a fast-paced world of modern lifestyles and different cultures.<\/p>\n<p>Archaeology, elder knowledge and tribal traditions provide the foundation for\u00a0the project\u2019s youth exhibit on the core values of Hopi culture. The exhibit, called \u201cFollowing in the Footprints of Our Ancestors,\u201d\u00a0presents the Hopi youths\u2019 voices on how they maintain their core values amidst threats and challenges to their deeply rooted traditions. It will feature presentations and video screenings that tell the story of Hopi cultural continuity and the challenges for sustaining these traditions.<\/p>\n<p>Working with Flagstaff\u00a0spray artist Anthony Esparza, the youths will lead the community in the creation of a collage that explores the future of young Hopis.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibit also includes panel discussions at 2:15 p.m. Saturday and Sunday with Hopi youths and elders, facilitated by\u00a0<strong>Wolf Gumerman<\/strong>, director of the university\u2019s Honors Program, and\u00a0<strong>Joelle Clark<\/strong>, who directs the project.<\/p>\n<p>The Hopi Festival of Arts and Culture takes place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 3-4 at the Museum of Northern Arizona and will feature 75 of the top Hopi artists, speakers, demonstrators, and seasoned performers of music and dance.<\/p>\n<p>For festival information, visit\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/musnaz.org\/hp\/hopi_fest_2010.shtml\">http:\/\/musnaz.org\/hp\/hopi_fest_2010.shtml<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"search-results-excerpt-link\" href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/hopi-footprints-project-to-be-featured-at-weekend-festival\/\">The Museum of Northern Arizona will be brimming with all things Hopi this weekend during its 77th annual Hopi Festival of Arts and Culture, including an engaging exhibit that highlights NAU\u2019s\u00a0Hopi Footprints\u00a0project.
