{"id":19539,"date":"2010-04-21T15:43:15","date_gmt":"2010-04-21T22:43:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/?p=19539"},"modified":"2013-12-16T10:33:50","modified_gmt":"2013-12-16T17:33:50","slug":"hit-and-fun-percussion-ensemble-to-take-a-whack-at-keaton-film","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/hit-and-fun-percussion-ensemble-to-take-a-whack-at-keaton-film\/","title":{"rendered":"Hit and fun: Percussion Ensemble to take a whack at Keaton film"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You\u2019ll get a bang out of the NAU Percussion Ensemble when it provides a live soundtrack to Buster Keaton\u2019s silent comedy\u00a0<em>The Balloonatic<\/em>\u00a0during a free concert on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. April 23 in Ardrey Memorial Auditorium.<\/p>\n<p>The performance will feature the 22-minute film with the ensemble providing a xylophone, a four-voice marimba band and a small traps drum set.\u00a0Two sound effect specialists also will complement the 1922 film\u2019s comic sequences.<\/p>\n<p>Musical selections are drawn from historic styles of Charleston dance, light classical, novelty fox-trots and the ragtime march\u2014including<em>Yes! We Have No Bananas<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Other highlights will be Nathan Daughtrey\u2019s\u00a0<em>Adaptation<\/em>, Michael Burritt\u2019s\u00a0<em>Shadow Chasers<\/em>, performed by junior performance major\u00a0<strong>Drew Worden<\/strong>, and a newly composed sextet for world percussion instruments by Hemphill called\u00a0<em>Global Integration<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The sextet will provide glimpses into various cultures including Brazil, Cuba, Peru, Trinidad, Indonesia, Nigeria, Egypt and West Africa, with Middle Eastern influences.
