A daylong conference focused on civic engagement in a democratic society will take place Friday, April 23, in NAU\u2019s School of Communication. Hosted by senior speech communication majors as part of their capstone class, the free conference features panels, presentations and workshops that touch on communication as an impetus for social change.<\/p>\n

\nThis discussion and the workshop that follows are aimed at motivating and helping individuals create change within their communities.<\/p>\n

\nLearn how the physical body communicates important messages of resistance to domination.<\/p>\n
\n12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
\nKeynote speaker Christine Harold, assistant professor of communication at the University of Washington, will address the importance of culture jamming and pranking in society as a way to confront injustice.<\/p>\n
\nThis panel will focus on bringing social change by working outside state institutions.<\/p>\n
\n<\/span><\/strong>3 to 3:50 p.m.
\nLed by the grassroots organization Repeal Coalition, this workshop will focus on training individuals how to canvass and civically engage in their communities.<\/p>\n

\nExplore how technological innovations can be used to address public concerns, how the understanding of technology has historically shifted and how cyber-activism influences past and present social movements.<\/p>\n
