{"id":19502,"date":"2010-04-20T14:53:37","date_gmt":"2010-04-20T21:53:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/?p=19502"},"modified":"2013-12-16T11:23:09","modified_gmt":"2013-12-16T18:23:09","slug":"faculty-celebrated-with-awards-recognition-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/faculty-celebrated-with-awards-recognition-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Faculty celebrated with awards, recognition"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_19504\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19504\" style=\"width: 493px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19504\" alt=\"3 women teachers\" src=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/dist.jpg\" width=\"493\" height=\"219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2013\/05\/dist.jpg 493w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2013\/05\/dist-300x133.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 493px) 100vw, 493px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19504\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Natalie Hess, Mary Reid and Catherine Ueckert are this year&#8217;s Distinguished Teaching Fellows.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Faculty known for their commitment to students and the university received awards during a ceremony at the High Country Conference Center on April 19.<\/p>\n<p><strong>David Grider<\/strong>, associate professor of construction management<strong>, Thomas Hoisch<\/strong>, professor of geology, and\u00a0<strong>Gregory Larkin<\/strong>, professor of English, received the President\u2019s Award for Faculty and Academic Professionals from NAU President\u00a0<strong>John Haeger<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The three faculty members were singled out to receive the award for their exemplary contributions to the NAU mission in at least three categories: creativity in teaching, creative use of technology, advising, assessment, recruitment\/retention, collaborative research, diversity and service.<\/p>\n<p>Haeger and\u00a0<strong>Liz Grobsmith<\/strong>, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs, presented\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/?p=19486&amp;preview=true&amp;preview_id=19486&amp;preview_nonce=968129bea7\">more than 60 awards<\/a><\/span>, including faculty promotions, to those who demonstrate excellence in their profession throughout the year.<\/p>\n<p>Among them were six faculty members who were presented with the Teacher of the Year Award from their colleges, and others were recognized for promotion and tenure status.<\/p>\n<p>The three-year appointment recognizes the scholars\u2019 impact on undergraduate learning and provides them the opportunity to develop and teach their \u201cdream course.\u201d They also become board members on the NAU Teaching Academy.\u00a0<strong>Natalie Hess<\/strong>, professor of bilingual and multicultural education at NAU-Yuma,\u00a0<strong>Mary Reid<\/strong>, professor in the School of Earth Sciences and Environmental Sustainability, and\u00a0<strong>Catherine Ueckert<\/strong>, associate professor of biology education, also were honored as the 2010 Distinguished Teaching Fellows.<\/p>\n<p>Hess is known on the NAU-Yuma campus and in her community as a teacher-scholar who takes an experiential approach to student learning and integrates students\u2019 challenging class work into community contexts. Students call her a wise, innovative, creative and inspirational teacher and mentor.<\/p>\n<p>Reid\u2019s classes are considered dynamic, real-world and challenging for the way they place learning activities into practical in-class and out-of-class contexts to increase students\u2019 participation in their own learning. She also is admired by colleagues for her repertoire of teaching approaches that fit her content.<\/p>\n<p>Ueckert\u2019s deliberative attention to the teaching of multiple sections of her introductory biology course has led to more program coherence and improved student engagement, motivation and success.
