{"id":19224,"date":"2010-03-29T12:41:31","date_gmt":"2010-03-29T19:41:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/?p=19224"},"modified":"2013-12-18T14:40:04","modified_gmt":"2013-12-18T21:40:04","slug":"new-art-gallery-reflects-one-community-vision","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/new-art-gallery-reflects-one-community-vision\/","title":{"rendered":"New art gallery reflects &#8216;one community&#8217; vision"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Stained glass pieces by Christina Norlin light up the lobby, pottery by Suzanne Botello dots the staircase and acrylic works on canvas by Mishael Magarian line the hallway of a new art gallery hosted in the High Country Conference Center.<\/p>\n<p>The program, a collaboration among Northern Arizona University, the city of Flagstaff and Sodexo Conferencing, developed from NAU\u2019s vision to showcase Flagstaff\u2019s vibrant artistic community at the conference center.<\/p>\n<p>The artists on display were chosen based on their experience and the sustainability of their artwork. They are part of a pilot program on exhibit until the gallery\u2019s Grand Opening reception during the July 2 First Friday Artwalk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo far we are getting excellent feedback from the community and conference guests,\u201d said\u00a0<strong>Andrea Graves<\/strong>, program coordinator at the conference center. \u201cPeople are thrilled to see that community members are shown here.\u201d<\/p>\n<table width=\"232\" border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"10\" cellpadding=\"0\" align=\"right\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"212\" height=\"273\">\n<p><figure style=\"width: 223px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Strength-in-Tradition\" src=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Strength-in-Tradition.jpg\" width=\"223\" height=\"260\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8216;Strength in Tradition&#8217; by Mishael Magarian<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>The Art Gallery Committee, composed of NAU administrators, Flagstaff Beautification and Public Art Committee members and staff from the conference center, will distribute the first public call to artists mid-April. Submissions will be reviewed by a jury of Public Art Commission members.<\/p>\n<p>Three to six local artists will be selected every six months to showcase their art in the redesigned space set against a view of the San Francisco Peaks through windows lining the gallery area.<\/p>\n<p>The gallery is suited to accommodate both two-dimensional framed pieces (including stained glass) and three-dimensional pieces such as pottery, sculpture and jewelry in pedestal cases.<\/p>\n<p>Conference center guests and Flagstaff residents are encouraged to wander about the naturally lit gallery and among the rotating art works.<\/p>\n<p>The gallery is free and open based on hours of operation and scheduled events.
