{"id":19206,"date":"2010-03-26T12:11:55","date_gmt":"2010-03-26T19:11:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/?p=19206"},"modified":"2013-12-18T15:04:38","modified_gmt":"2013-12-18T22:04:38","slug":"nau-opera-enchants-with-the-magic-flute","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/nau-opera-enchants-with-the-magic-flute\/","title":{"rendered":"NAU Opera enchants with \u2018The Magic Flute\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NAU Opera will perform Mozart\u2019s<em>The Magic Flute<\/em>\u00a0at 7:30 p.m.\u00a0April 2 and 3 and 2 p.m. April 4 at NAU\u2019s Ardrey Memorial Auditorium.<\/p>\n<p>The production, directed by\u00a0<strong>Nando Schellen<\/strong>\u00a0and conducted by\u00a0<strong>Nicholas Ross<\/strong>, will feature NAU soloists, an NAU opera chorus and the NAU Symphony Orchestra.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMozart\u2019s music is always related to human relationships,\u201d Schellen said. \u201cTo me, the opera says you need to grow to get what you want, be purified and balanced to achieve your goal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The opera contains 15 soloist roles that are double-cast with NAU students. The Queen of the Night is performed by\u00a0<strong>Kai Xin Tay<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Austen Eames<\/strong>; Tamino by\u00a0<strong>Roland Mills<\/strong>\u00a0and<strong>\u00a0Jeff Strand<\/strong>, Papageno by\u00a0<strong>Toby Kidd<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Daniel Kwast<\/strong>, Pamina by\u00a0<strong>Sandra Flores<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Staci Dickens<\/strong>, and Sarastro by\u00a0<strong>Scott Ballantine<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Jared Levin<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOpera is the art form that uses the voice to express feelings and drama more than any other dramatic art,\u201d Schellen said. \u201cIt is very difficult for students to learn how to do that, as well as do it in the German language, but we have one of the best singer ensembles in the West.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Written in 1791,\u00a0<em>The Magic Flute<\/em>\u00a0can be considered a modern fairy tale. The story focuses on Prince Tamino, who falls in love with Pamina, the daughter of the Queen of the Night, and on the humble bird catcher, Papageno. Pamina has been kidnapped and lives in the palace of Sarastro, ruler of the sun.<\/p>\n<p>This is Schellen\u2019s fourth time directing\u00a0<em>The Magic Flute<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEach time I discover something new,\u201d he said.\u00a0 \u201cI encourage my singers to come up with their own ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The NAU production has modern staging, placing the characters closer to the audience and the story in the present.<\/p>\n<p>The performance will be in German with English supertitles. Pre-performance lectures will begin at 6:45 p.m. on April 2 and 3 and at 1:15 p.m. April 4.<\/p>\n<p>Tickets are $10 for students, faculty and staff; $18 for seniors; and $22.50 for community members.\u00a0 Groups of four or more will receive a discount.
