{"id":19097,"date":"2010-03-23T14:39:18","date_gmt":"2010-03-23T21:39:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/?p=19097"},"modified":"2013-12-19T08:53:25","modified_gmt":"2013-12-19T15:53:25","slug":"a-supergirl-speaks-out","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/a-supergirl-speaks-out\/","title":{"rendered":"A \u2018supergirl\u2019 speaks out"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In honor of \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/home.nau.edu\/%5Cmsc%5Cwhm.asp\">Women\u2019s History Month<\/a>, NAU\u2019s Multicultural Center will host Liz Funk, journalist and author of\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/lizfunk.com\/supergirls\/\">Supergirls Speak Out: Inside the Secret Crisis of Overachieving Girls<\/a>,<\/em>\u00a0at 5:30 p.m. Friday, March 26, in the Gardner Auditorium of The W.A. Franke College of Business.<\/p>\n<p>Funk will speak about a \u201ccondition that is spreading quickly from Generation X to Y\u2014and even to little girls.\u201d \u00a0Funk coined the term \u201csupergirls\u201d to describe girls who \u201cbelieve that in order to be happy they must excel at their job or career, have the best grades, wear the coolest clothes, date the best-looking boy and have the perfect body size.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Supergirls Speak Out<\/em>\u00a0closely follows the lives of five young women and surveys many more in research that reveals how girls \u201coften feel the need to compete against not only everyone else, but themselves\u2014a destructive habit that leads to depression and other emotional disorders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Funk said the pressure among young women to be perfect is what inspired her to write the book. &#8220;I thought it would be really important to have a young person talk about the pressure\u2026from inside the phenomenon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Funk began her career in journalism at an early age\u2014she was a columnist at the\u00a0<em>Altamont Enterprise<\/em>\u00a0in Albany, N.Y. when she was in high school.
