NAU\u2019s Latin American Studies Committee presents \u201cHaiti: History, Art, Politics, Language and the Earthquake of 2010,\u201da night of presentations, film and fundraising for the island nation at 7:30 p.m. March 11 in the Cline Library Assembly Hall.<\/p>\n
In addition to presentations by local experts, there will be a 25-minute video, \u201cHaiti: Inside a Failed State,\u201d a film that chronicles the dire economic conditions in Haiti before the earthquake and explains their origins in the context of globalization.<\/p>\n
Presenters include\u00a0Susan Deeds<\/strong>, professor of Latin American history,\u00a0Marc Matera<\/strong>, assistant professor of Atlantic world history,\u00a0Jim Wilce<\/strong>, anthropology professor and specialist in linguistic anthropology,\u00a0Greta Murphy<\/strong>, assistant professor of art history and art history program coordinator, and\u00a0Mitch Askew<\/strong>, a graduate student majoring in history who has spent the last two summers in Haiti working with a non-profit organization.<\/p>\n There will also be opportunities to donate to Haitian relief efforts at the event, such as \u201cThe Religious of Jesus and Mary: Hearts for Haiti Building Project,\u201d which funds food, water, shelter, and medicine; \u201cOur Little Brothers and Sisters,\u201d which maintains orphanages; and the Flagstaff group \u201cArtists for Haiti,\u201d which will sell artwork by local artists and donate the proceeds to HAS Haiti, a primary hospital for specialized surgery.<\/p>\n The event is free.
