Muleady-Mecham will teach biology courses\u00a0to the university students and astronomy to the local community. She also will conduct research in the region\u2019s nature preserves.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/jht.sagepub.com\/cgi\/reprint\/33\/4\/451\">November 2009 issue<\/a>\u00a0of the\u00a0<em>Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Research<\/em>\u00a0ranks NAU&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>School of Hotel and Restaurant Management<\/strong>\u00a022nd out of the top 100 Hospitality and Tourism Programs in the world that provided the most research instances by journal article from 2002-2006. The school also ranks 11th in the world for research output from 1992-2006.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The article, &#8220;A Web-Based Survey of the Relationship Between Buddhist Religious Practices, Health, and Psychological Characteristics: Research Methods and Preliminary Results,&#8221; by\u00a0<strong>Bill Wiist<\/strong>, special assistant to the executive dean in the College of Health and Human Services,\u00a0<strong>Bruce Sullivan<\/strong>, professor of comparative studies,\u00a0<strong>Heidi Wayment,\u00a0<\/strong>psychology professor, and\u00a0<strong>Meghan Warren<\/strong>, assistant professor of<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>physical therapy and athletic training, was published in the print version of the\u00a0<em>Journal of Religion and Health<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>\n<table width=\"100\" border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"5\" cellpadding=\"0\" align=\"right\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<p><figure style=\"width: 216px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"ant\" src=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/ant.jpg\" width=\"216\" height=\"122\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pheidole stephensi<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong>Stephanie \u201cSky\u201d Stephens<\/strong>, who earned her doctorate in forest science from NAU in 2008, has had a newly discovered species of ant named after her. Stephens discovered the\u00a0<em>Pheidole stephensi<\/em>\u00a0as part of her Ph.D. dissertation research in Ghana. \u201cIn the taxonomy world, this is a great honor and is\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www4.nau.edu\/insidenau\/bumps\/2008\/6_25_08\/spotlight.htm#2\">the second insect species<\/a>\u00a0to be named after an NAU researcher in the past two years,\u201d explained\u00a0<strong>Mike Wagner<\/strong>, a Regents\u2019 Professor in the School of Forestry.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Alexandra Carpino<\/strong>, chair of the department of Comparative Cultural Studies and associate professor of art history, has become the assistant editor and editor-elect of<em>Etruscan Studies: Journal of the Etruscan Foundation<\/em>, the leading scholarly publication of Etruscology and related disciplines in the English language.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ishmael Munene<\/strong>, assistant professor of educational leadership, recently had his book published,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Transforming-Academia-Exploring-Universities-Comparative\/dp\/1607419726\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1267049961&amp;sr=8-1\"><em>Transforming the Academia: Exploring African Universities in a Comparative Context<\/em><\/a>, by Nova Science Publishers.\u00a0<strong>Michael Butcher<\/strong>, a doctoral candidate in the College of Education\u2019s educational leadership program, contributed a chapter to the book.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Eric Betz<\/strong>, a senior majoring in journalism and astronomy\/physics, has won the grand prize in the inaugural writing contest for Arizona undergraduate students sponsored by the Water Resources Research Center at the University of Arizona. His article on El Ni\u00f1o\u2019s effect on water supplies, \u201cA Warm Wave Brings Wet Weather,\u201d also won the prize for best article from Northern Arizona University. Eric will receive a $100 prize and see his work published in the quarterly newsletter,\u00a0<em>Arizona Water Resource<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Residents of Gabaldon Hall<\/strong>\u00a0raised $726 for the Grand Canyon Chapter of the Red Cross toward its Haiti relief efforts. The funds were the result of a \u201cPenny War\u201d in which residents of each of the hall\u2019s three wings collected spare change in large water jugs at the front desk. Each penny was worth 1 point, but nickels, dimes, quarters and dollars were worth negative points\u20145, 10, 25 and 100, respectively. The strategy was for residents of one wing to put pennies in their own jug for positive points, but to put coins with a negative value in their opponents\u2019 collection jugs.
